Usually I have a basic idea but as you write you get totally into it and Characters misbehave and do things you didn't think they were going to do!!! Sometimes when I write my grammer goes to rubbish as my mind works faster than my fingers can type... But hey... If it doesn't turn me on then how can I expect it to turn YOU on... Yes, I agree with Stephanie, a story tends to acquire a life of its own once started. My first submission "Resolving Gizelle's Dilemma" is based on some true facts.
Whereas I started out with a quite straightforward plot, based on a certain 19-year old girl close to me who inspired the story, and with her picture propped up before me to stare at while typing, a question occasionally presented itself which seemed to make the story more logical and likely than I had originally planned. As a result the thing careered off in a totally new direction.
This first submission of mine has been written in chapters as I go, the fourth and last episode is still in my head until tonight.
It all depends.
There are times when I cannot get more than one sentence down before I feel like I start shouting at my body to calm down. And there are other times when I just think... well... I'll stop here and come back to it later just not in the mood for it.
I do find that in my shorter stories I seem to get turned on more as I write them with someone specific in mind. I know what they like, I know how we are together, and I have them clearly in my mind doing the things I write. In my longer ones, I feel more of an observer and it is a different kind of turned on if that makes sense.
I've discovered that masturbation scenes, although lots of fun to write, are the hardest to focus on... as I seem to get carried away

I've only discovered Lush quite recently and decided to try publishing some of what I've done just to see if anyone else likes them.
I'm really critical of my own work so I write, then read it over and over, editing, changing story lines and correcting mistakes. So far I think I must read them 50+ times each.
The result is that I get to the point where I've read it so often that it bores me and I usually decide it isn't good enough. So I leave it for a few weeks and come back to it. Most of the time I fall in love with it again.
It's going to take me forever to publish stories. I'm really jealous of the people who can trot them out at the rate of 1 or 2 per week.
I don't necessarily get turned on while writing a story, but I do need to have the feeling "this could work" for me to not delete it. I also tend to write very long stories, where you end up having several pages being without any sort of sexual material. The sex in my stories comes natural, where it fits. If I get the feeling that I've rushed into the sex in one place I'll just chuck the entire part in the bin and start again.
But if I read them again I usually get turned on. After all, it's my fantasies that are being played out in the story.

My writing ritual is very much a masturbation event.
I write the story in my head over the corse of many days, sometimes weeks. Then when l'm totally happy with the general story I start writing it down. I never write it in one night because l think it can be rushed doing that.
I really take my time, and generally end up masturbating and the end of each session. If I don't then that tells me it's not good enough. How can l expect it to arouse the reader if it fails to arouse me?
This is the way I've always writen. I don't think I could ever write erotica during the day or say in a room full of people, I need to be alone, relaxed and sometimes naked.

My stories are little takes of autobiography. I guess I think if it turns me on, it will turn-on someone else but mostly, I write for myself. I share stories that are sweet for me and sometimes I do write about painful events. These painful stories are not shared often because there's enough pain in the world and because, I found out early on that people tend to judge harshly the things they don't understand. Once a story is in my mind, I work on it non stop until I have it written and then sometimes take days to EDIT EDIT EDIT. I write about sex like I would write a recipe because that's what I like to read. Romance is OK but to read, write and learn about the art of sex is a definite turn-on for me. Seems there's always a moral in my stories (at least in my mind) and the moral is always the same -good sex is good for a body and for the soul. My definition of good sex always involves love these days and so I'm inspired by the one I love. This can get redundant unfortunately. I write nude or mostly nude and masturbate as well.
Wish I had to talent to write fiction.

To be turned on by what I write, the right words need to be used at the proper time. Repetition is a turn off, as there are so many ways in which one can express their artful talents through each keystroke to arouse all of the senses.
I definitely get turned on as I'm writing. If I am not turned on I don't have the passion and tiny details that make a good erotic story get under your skin. This goes away after a million readings and edits. Honestly, I'm sick of the damn story by the time it's ready to be published!!!

The rule in erotica writing that 'if it doesn't turn you on, it won't turn on your readers' is probably as fundamental as it gets.
That said, the aspect of the 'turn-onedness' is probably different for different writers. For me, if I'm in a groove with writing a story (or specifically, the sex scene/s in them) the arousal definitely is there, but it's something I have to kindof sit on and sublimate into the writing. Like any good teasing game, there has to be a component of discipline!
Sometimes I've gone back to old stories and been surprised to get excited over them and have that feeling of "Wait, did I say that?!" If the story reads a lot dirtier thanI ever remembered it being, that's a very flattering sensation. A bit of a shock, but a nice one.
To a point. The first drafts have a stronger effect, then as I continue to review the same material I have to either add more details or reconfigure the entire story.
Sometimes once I post a story and look back at what I wrote, I don't believe it is mine. But that happens once in a blue moon.

I write stories about circumstances that would really turn me on if I could be the main character. While I'm writing I'm calculating what would entertain me (or someone like me) the most. So, while I'm not turned on in the moment while I'm writing, I usually am quite turned on when I go back to it after a bit.

Over the years planning (P), outlining (O), writing (W), editing (E) and rewriting (R) have served me well.
As I write, I try to imagine what the characters in the story would do at the given moment. I’ll typically insert a place holder depicting the type of sex I want at that point in the story and then I’ll go back and flesh it out later. Personally, I just find it easier to flesh out the storyline first and then add in the erotica. If the sex scenes don't light my fire, I figure they aren't worth putting into print so to speak.
My last story was rather difficult for me to write. So I decided to get into the character a little more. Part of the tale involves as aphrodisiac chocolate which also gets one quite high. Available over the counter, and quite legal. I had some myself. And I must say it worked amazingly well. I almost became a one handed typist. By the time I'd finished writing it...well that's another story. I do believe if a story line isn't arousing, I can hardly expect anyone else to find it so.
I absolutely get turned on when writing my stories, maybe even more than when just reading someone elses, I think maybe because I write about my fantasies. It's my way of exploring what I like and want without actually have to do it. . it lets me feel how I like something, or what the experience will feel like before I just do it. I nearly always write naked, and always get my self off after writing.
This is a fascinating discussion, and I feel as if I could answer "all of the above" in regard to different experiences I have had of writing, fantasizing, masturbating, and sharing. For a long while I couldn't write erotica simply because I would get too aroused to keep writing, so it was all very inefficient. Now, I find like others here that the stories are usually the result of a long process in which the images and characters form themselves in my mind, sometimes in the middle of the night. And when that happens, yes, I need some relief. By the time I'm writing now the whole scene is so vivid that I feel as if I'm right there, with the characters and sometimes the fact of writing, while arousing, produces a kind of erotic high that doesn't require immediate physical release.
I'm also grateful to so many of the Lush writers for letting me live in their fantasies, fantasies that turn me on but that I wouldn't have come up with on my own.
oh and i almost never change the stories i write- i find the first instinct to be the best.
