Correct. Soldiers in Southeast Asia found out very quickly that in a hot, humid environment such as that one, the elastic legs of brief style underwear would very quickly get soaked with sweat and rub the insides of your thighs raw. That leads to "crotch rot," which is a fungus that actually grew there. The answer was either boxer briefs or nothing at all. The commando units such as the Green Berets and the Rangers who were out in the jungle for days at a time found it easier and more comfortable to not wear anything at all in the way of underwear, hence the term "going commando."

I discovered this myself the hard way when I was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group at Fort Kobe, Panama in 1977. I was there for their Jungle Warfare School and came down with crotch rot a week into the course. Ever since then, every time I went into the field the briefs stayed home.

In my current life (I retired from the military in 1998) I find that going commando on long motorcycle rides is very comfortable, so I do it then. Other than that, I'm a boxer brief guy.
