I put this in the "Ask The Gals section since women are the ones who usually refer to sex as dirty. WHY? If anyone tells a joke with a little sexual inuendo a woman will say that is was a dirty joke & get your mind out of the gutter. SEX Is NOT Dirty. Books & magazines related to sex are Not dirty. Can someone explain where this came from?
Christian and religious Conservatism denoted anything sexual as flithy and impure. Hence why the term dirty got slapped to sexual conduct and acts. You are right, sex is not dirty, but years of dogma, religious indoctrination and puritanism have sullied the idea of sex.

Also, please note, it is not mostly women who call sex dirty, I'd say it's equal men and women but those from conservative backgrounds.

Thank you so very much for your response. Now I can understand where this silliness comes from.
Without more information about these "little sexual innuendos" it's hard to judge; but perhaps the women in question more precisely mean "That is SO inappropriate" or "That is So misogynistic" or some other, more accurate word. Sexual innuendos in mixed company or certain social situations can certainly be inappropriate, or personally offensive in other ways. Dirty is just a handy word for it.

I guess what originally sparked my curiosity was the fact that I had heard the statement too often & somewhere in lush stories a woman said that she had worked in an adult book story selling "DIRTY" magazines. OF Course she was referring to sex magazines. They are NOT dirty magazines. These are adults having sex...and SEX IS NOT DIRTY~!
