Sometime back I read an article where a high school football player was suspended for making a touchdown in football then pointing to heaven. I know that we should separate releigon and politics but isn't this going too far? I thought it meant not to teach students about a supreme being but not that if you believe, you will be punished. I'm not sure I believe in a God but should I be punished if I do? Damn! it is school.
Yes, it's definitely going too far. It's not like he's forcing his beliefs on classmates or pushing a non-personal agenda.

Sports and God kind of go hand in hand for a lot of people. It's kind of ingrained in sports-culture and can be even more intense in certain parts of the world. If you watch a UFC card in Brazil, for example, 95% of the hometown fighters thank Jesus so much that you'd think he makes it a point to sit cage-side, snacking on corn-nuts and working his magic so ensure that the fighters of faith win.

People should get to believe whatever they want to believe in, even in school. It's not like a football jock pointing to heaven in a moment of excitement is going to brainwash anyone into religion. It seems like a rather casual gesture. I would draw the line if he was handing out pamphlets about God/religion or actively trying to push his beliefs or make a big deal out of it. Administrators need to look at context before making dumb black-and-white decisions like this.
Yes it is going too far. Schools are in the education business not the knowledge and thinking business. Educate as in get their minds as similar as possible so they are well under the control of society. Knowledge and the ability to think are dangerous to the leaders of society. Fuck schools.

I'm British so I may have some things wrong but:
1. I thought you had freedom of religious expression in the constitution.
2. Oath of allegiance - one nation under God.
3. The motto of the USA is In God We Trust.

Now it may be me but I think that decision is a little odd, even unlawful don't you think?

After reading this, I no longer care about the thread, because that part of your post alone can stand on its own as contending for post of the year on Lush.rXG287jlNyRg65JA (My reply is brought you to by MetroPCS. Everyone's moving to Metro!)

I can't find anything refering to a player being suspended from school, but a player was penalised in a game for what was seen as an excessive celebration...

Of course this could be the same incident just escalated by word of mouth.

Why not read some stories instead

like overmyknee i never read that article but i did read where a texas 4x100 relay team was banned from the state championship when one of it's members pointed to heaven. i think it is ridiculous to penalize a team for excessive celebration for pointing to heaven for a few seconds. what is the world coming to?
Thank you all for your input and for ginger's and overmyknees comments. Perhaps I was mistaken and in my muddled mind I read both of those articles and combined them together

Again I ask isn't that unlawful/unconstitutional as it breaks the 1st Amendment?

I think in a bid to seem more progressive, it's being taken to a level of anti-religion...which isn't all that progressive. Freedom of choice should be above all else, and religion shouldn't be shoved down someone's throat, it also shouldn't be punished...as someone above me has already pointed out.

"What is the quality of your intent?" - Thurgood Marshall

I'm a Taoist because I love the philosophy. It does not promote hate, only understanding.

God is a belief system. You believe or your not sure or you don't believe.

Your choice, just don't try to force me to believe like you. I will not. I form my own opinions and I will fight for that freedom.
I am always a gentleman.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."

Perhaps the constitution is no longer taught in schools? I find it interesting that some schools now have LGBT meetings and I am glad that society is becoming more tolerant, yet odd that we seem to pick and choose what we tolerate.

I am amazed at how poorly some people have been treated in the past because of their beliefs or behavior and odd that America, supposedly founded on Christian principles and a haven for oppressed people, is becoming oppressive towards the free expression of individual's religeous views.

That is sad. Reading this thread makes me think that religion aside, we as humans still feel in our core that there is something not right there.

how would i know what is unconstitutional and unlawful? we have nine jerks sitting on the supreme court that interprets the constitution and tells us what it says and they are supposed be all knowing scholars of the law yet almost every decision they make comes down to a 5-4 vote so there are always 4 who has no idea what the constitution actually says. the sad thing is that is that if one of those jerks retire or die and a new one is appointed, that 5-4 vote could turn around and what was unconstitutional is now constitutional.
Schools should teach how to think not what to think
