I think the meaning, outside or within sexual encounters doesn't change. Whether it is used to injure or pleasantly excite is what changes depending on when it is used. Slut was an insult at one time but now it is a goal. I like the definition that says a slut is a woman with the morals of a man.

Here I go, about to be screamed at AGAIN. To my mind, a slut is someone who enters into a relationship with one person and then has affairs with other people that their partner knows nothing about. (Shared experiences I DO NOT view as cheating so long as BOTH partners are WILLINGLY agreed to it.) Other than that, it's just an archaic way of putting down women who have more than one sexual relationship in their lives.

To my way of thinking, calling a woman a slut is a form of compliment. It means she is not so wrapped up in today's repressive, overburdened, morality that she has forgotten that sex is also supposed to be fun. I have definate opinions on this one. Women are generally (always?) singled out as sluts. Now, as a lesbian, I can say that my gay guy friends are some of the biggest sluts i've ever known. Straight men (sorry boys!) are too, most of them.
