Derma Rollers

Have you heard of this tool used for skin care?

Apparently, there's a new hype about it. The reviews on Amazon are quite favorable, though some say it takes a few months to notice results. It may look frightening at first glance, but it's supposed to help for many things : wrinkles, roughness, acne scars, stretch marks, cellulite, etc.

The mechanism of action is twofold :

1- It damages the skin to variable depths and forces it to enter an healing process, resulting in a more evenly skin.
2- It creates gaps, and allows topicals to be effective deeper in the skin.

There are many lenghts of spikes avaible (0.5-2.0mm), and also many possible regimens. It can be used 1-2x/week with short spikes to simply enhance the skin, or about once every 2 months for harsher sessions targeting specific issues. Caution is advised.

Have you people tried it or heard of it?

Myself, I never tried it, but might buy one to reduce light stretch marks on my hips.

Complete Instructions

Wow, it almost looks like a kind of meat-tenderizer for the skin.

I don't think I would try this one out. The concept is interesting and I can sort of see why it might work to some degree in terms of bringing blood flow to the area that can maybe work to heal some of those issues etc, but yeah, I think it's too much for me.

I don't think there's anything that really bothers me enough on my body to try it out on as well at this point. I have always been a lotion-aholic - I am constantly moisturizing, so my skin is quite soft and - fingers-crossed, I don't have cellulite yet (but I think this is a genetic thing and I've been lucky that way). I have a couple of small scars but meh, I just consider them life-tattoos. smile

Let us know your review if you end up getting it!
The previous picture I posted are surely the longest spikes you can get, that one would only be used for legs/hips/stomach and only maybe once every 1-2 month(s). I surely wouldn't use that one on my face, lol. Here's one with shorter spikes :

Actually if you don't think your skin has any flaw, there's no point in using it really. Between, exercising and keeping low body fat is probably the best thing you can do to prevent cellulite. But as I've said, I noticed some stretch marks appearing on my hips about 1 year ago (very light, but still), and a guy on a bodybuilding.com forum recommended me this along Bio-Oil. I figured for only $15 I might try it out.

I might order one soon and keep you informed, but it might take a few months before I really see the results.
Yeah, I'm definitely gonna pass on this one. It just isn't worth it to me. Damaging your skin to enter it into a healing process seems a bit extreme...especially when there are other, better methods out there. So no.

wow hmm not too sure about that process. i get acupuncture ocassionally to help with various issues and massages every couple of months. but i agree with doll, lotion is a good thing. ill stick with that smile

I had an ex-bf with a bit of this and also a few light stretch marks on the inner biceps. Stretch marks aren't a big deal though - it probably bothers the person with them far more than it does to anyone else.

I think oils and the lotions are probably best. Bio-oil is good. Or Webber's Vit-E for smaller areas. I have used tons of lotions on the market. The best I've come across is Kiehl's Creme de Corps. A little goes a long way. I find that it holds moisture the longest. The H2O Plus line is also amazing and highly recommended. I've been using their moisturizing body balms since I was a teen and have turned friends onto that line when they ask about the softness of my skin. It's reasonably priced as well.

And as far as stretch marks go, they never completely go away. You can only fade them over time. Natural methods like the ones you mentioned work best. Especially pure Vitamin-E.

Here's an amateur video that seems informative (I didn't watch it all). Go to 3:10 to see it in action ; you'll see it's not as bad as it seems.

Yes, I think that's the line you mentionned in Skincare 101. But I don't use moisturizer on my face, since I already have oily skin. I already have Vit-E lotions for my body.

True, or so I've heard. But different methods can help them fade more, I guess.

PS: Why do I always feel like every girl's best gay friend when I'm in En Vogue!? I'll really need to watch some raw hardcore stuff after this discussion.

I have a gay best friend, and he keeps himself up pretty well, but only himself. There isn't a single fashion tip he could give me. So you're not like every girl's fay bff in that regard. So you're good.

this comment is a little off the wall, but it looks kind of like a good choice for a bdsm sex toy...

I saw you were the last poster before entering the thread, and was SURE you'd say something about BSDM.

*nods* there's a medical apparatus called a whartenburg (sp?) wheel that looks similar and it's fun to use on someone who's been tied down... kind of drives you a bit mad, if you're into that sort of thing.

thing is, and i'm serious here, if i had a straight guy friend into this stuff, i mean, seriously into it, like we could talk polishes and he GOT it and shared my passion, well, you never know what would happen, do you? think about is, just of one of the girls, sitting around while while we do our nails, dressed up in our sexy lingerie, lay around in bed touching, kissing, having pillow fights, you know, all that lesbian stuff. ;)

No, I'm not into things that drive me mad. But I'll add this Derma Roller on your Christmas list.

This will make you suffer as well as give you a nice skin.
back to the topic, it mentions that it's good to reduce scarring - lately i've been thinking that i wouldn't mind a few of mine being reduced - does anyone here have any tips or tricks for me?

Well you could try using it, the Derma Roller that is. But even myself I'm new with this, and couldn't give you precise instructions. Look in my opening post up there, I provided a link with full instructions.

I would get a prescription for a cream with hydroquinone in it and then make sure to keep those spots covered while in the sun until they fade.
There's also laser treatments you can try.
And I guess in the meantime keep it moisturized (Vit-E or cocoa butter) and massage the area to increase blood flow - that might help break down some of the scar tissue.
Or get a cute tattoo over it! Or use concealing makeup (either DermaBlend or Tattoo cover-up).
I'm sure there's other 'natural' remedies like lemon juice or eating cucumbers or fig leaves or something random like that, but I'd go for the prescription cream myself. silly

Vitamin E and coconut oil. Really anything with regenerative properties, because that's what you're going for. And plenty of patience, it takes time. There are other topical things that you can get as Ashleigh mentioned. But I know nothing about these, so I can't offer advice in that area. Keeping the areas covered and out of the sun while you're treating them is excellent advice, though.

I've heard good things about Mederma scar treatment. Never got around to using it though. My scars have never really bothered me.
done the vitamin E route, but haven't tried it with coconut oil, thanks, i'll try that out first... i don't know anything about mederma, so i'll google that - it never really bothered me too much until lately - it's not the scars so much that bug me as the memories associated with them - i'd just like to scrub them clean off my skin with sandpaper if i thought that would work smile

Sandpaper!?

Keep that probably sexy skin fresh.

Clean it off with the tears of unicorns and evil witches. I'll even help you find them.

Funny enough, using a good Kiehl's lotion to help reduce oily-ness on my face and it's worked brilliantly. There is one in particular called "facial fuel" which helps with skin tone, reducing oil and fine lines.

You may want to give it a shot. For those who have the occassional blemish, it works wonders for that as well!

Thanks, I might look it up. My face already looks decent though, it just gets a bit oily/shinny at times, and I usually wipe it off with a blotting paper if needed.

My general routines to enhance my look :

- Weight lifting + nutrition
- Buying/wearing clothes that fit me well
- Doing my hair + maintaining a light stubble
- Sunscreen cream (this one is important for anti-aging)
- Concealer for dark circles
- Creams for occasionnal acne
- Pubic shaving once every 3 days or so
- Body hair removal once a week (ears, nose, torso... I'm not naturally hairy, so this takes me 5 minutes or so)

Oh ok then, isn't that a little contradiction on your behalf?

I have occasionnal acne... on my back.

I'm going to be fully honest with you here : poking at me in such a manner makes you appear as an immature beta who is trying too hard to dethrone an alpha male. Any person with just a slight amount of common sense will agree. Anyone can observe my posts and interpret them the way they want to ; they really don't need your annoyance to figure that out.

I've stand my ground agaisnt crack addicts that were twice my size in real life. You really think I'm going to be intimidated by you because you have 5,000 posts and an avatar of Colin Farrell? Think again.

This is the last time I respond to one of your pointless post. You're not a raging bull to me, just an annoying fly tickling my balls. It's really not that hard to ignore you anyway.

If you still feel the need to make a foul of yourself, keep at it, you're doing a great job.
