And they're in charge of flying people around in a tin can in the air thousands of feet off the ground where you can't pull over and stop until you figure out where to go.
That's pretty darn scary, with the amount of air traffic in the skies now.
Fortunately, in more and more bigger and busier airports, they have or will install ground radar which will allow controllers to know exactly where everybody is on the ground. The maze of taxiway markers can get pretty confusing.
