I thought that a few photos of Liuwen's face would be inspiring:

.... "Stay on purpose, not on outcome. In other words, do the task because of what you love. Or do it because it will help someone [inspire], or because it is a valuable experience. Don't do it for the money or the recognition. Those will come naturally. This is the way of the world." ...

Sorry I can't write this with the charm of an Asian accent.

Hayley, I am so thankful for your wise words. Yes, I used to tell my students to "pursue your bliss" as Joseph Campbell used to say in his books on mythology.
Also as you quote, do something because "it is a valuable experience"
like go to the art gallery, or write a story because you love writing, and it so often happens that you get well known or wealthy as a by-product.

As for my Chinese crush----yes she is gorgeous BUT I am sure you are
beautiful as well.

Again, thank you!!

I belong to a business group [for ladies] in NY. She used the wise words in adressing us. So I cannot claim them as my own.

In writing to us, Vogue, April .. quoting her... [on becoming a Super Model, but I believe it applies universally] .. "A part of your world now belongs to everyone else. Your behavior and attitude can now impact others in a greater way, so there is now a responsibility to inject some positive energy into the world!"

There is something in her words for everyone I think.
I am always amazed how peeps from Asia, especially ladies, are soooo much wiser than us. Confucius effect I suppose.

Hayley, I will try to answer your difficult question as simply as I can for you. Originally, I think they had to be. But now they see the value of education better than we do here anyway, and now they want to be.
Specifically, Chinese women, in a Confucian society as you say, have always had to be wiser, and in fact, Beijing Opera is, to a great extent,
an admission that the GrandMother has the most power in a traditional family.

Well if GrandMother has the most power then I am surely living in three of the most traditional families on earth.. giggles.
But thank you. Confucian society rules!.
I agree about the education bit. Asian families set great store by education. This I have noticed.
