My g/f had dumped me, and for a long time, I couldn't get a date (this is the pre-internet era). I was horny and went to a gay club. I just wanted someone to ask me to dance, but no one did. I felt rejected. Before leaving, I asked a guy to dance, but nothing clicked, and I went home, more frustrated than ever. Maybe for the best, AIDS wasn't yet a thing.
Not much or a bar guy to start with (I am not "dry" per se but don't drink alcohol much) so not sure it is where I would go looking for company. Curiosity? Maybe.
There's an element of heat in this story.

Was at a biker bar that a bunch of gays did their thing. After I had been friends with the bikers for a while one of them suggested I need to let one of the fags suck me off. Time went on and one work night I stopped in late and this guy offer a few of us rides home. They whispered about who was going to be with me the driver won and soon we were in my bed.

Disease is the problem with random bar or car encounters. The men I have sex with have usually been from established swinger venues, web sites in the modern times. Couples looking for bi males are very safe bets, and the single males with endorsements or validations on their profiles. If the guy is diseased or abusive he's going to be outed on the site fairly quickly.
Of course I understand that for some folks its the thrill of the entirely anonymous encounter that is the attraction.
Since doctor told me that my extra-caricular activities may be very risky to my longevity, she put me on pREp and in 2023 dosed with the Mpox vaccine.
Now I still play around but with a bit of relief.
