LM...Peter King is a world class muckraking schmuck who wouldn't know football player if the guy climbed up in his lap and announced himself. The dumb bastard has almost zero credibility. Mike Mayock is a close second when it comes to saying absurdly stupid things.

King said the same things he's now blabbering about Sam -- about both of these guys when they were coming into the league... And both of these guys are quarterback sacking machines enjoying long, productive careers as defensive ends.

Elvis Dumervil - 6'0" 255 pounds

And this years Sack leader in the entire NFL: Dwight Freeney 6'1" 268#s

You should probably try to find someone who has a bit more knowledge and is held with more esteem for his opinions about NFL quality talent. Sam may not stick in the league...may not get drafted -- but he wouldn't be setting precedent because of his size, sexuality, race or or the school & competition level he is graduating from.

I hate to break it to you chief, but this is all wrong. Whether or not you agree Peter King is a good writer or not, I enjoy his MMQB article. But the evaluation of Sam and his abilities came from league source. Not something he just made up. But, as for someone with a bit more knowledge... read again what I said. I said that Sam may have to transition from DE to linebacker to have a chance at success in the NFL. As for your examples....

Elvis Dumervil.... damn good football player and Sam would be wise to model his career after Dumervil... an outside LINEBACKER in a 3-4 defense! Not a Defensive End. Not banging into a 350 lb offensive lineman for an entire game. Standing up on the edge on passing downs, not absorbing punishment from someone that outweighs him by 100 pounds.

As for this year's Sack leader in the NFL, Dwight Freeney. That's interesting, unless Freeney changed his name to Robert Mathis who was actually the NFL sack leader in 2013 with 19.5 Sacks. Which is 19 sacks more than the .5 Sacks that Freeney recorded in his 4 games played in 2013. Maybe you should find someone with a little bit more knowledge of football to help you understand a stat sheet. But for arguments sake, Freeney has been a great pass rusher/sack machine for several years now. He and Mathis both... are listed as LINEBACKERS, OLBs in a 3-4 defense! Sometimes they line up at the line of scrimmage in passing situations, but never (or at least very rarely) right over the OL nose. Always at an angle or off the line a little bit so they can use their speed to get around the edge.

I stand by my post, Sam has a chance at being an NFL player. Those chances are greater at LB than DE.

edit.... Lawrence Taylor played OLB for the Giants. Probably the greatest OLB to ever play the game, but no one confused him as a DE. And he played in a 3-4 defense with Carl Banks, Pepper Johnson, and Harry Carson. He's never been listed or talked about as one of the greatest Defensive Ends of all time.

Beer is a great beverage - in moderation.

I stand appropriately flogged and chastened.
The same GQP demanding we move on from January 6th, 2021 is still doing audits of the November 3rd, 2020 election.
And this is a bad thing how??

Yet another Sports 'Celebrity' seeking publicity by 'coming out'.

Why don't they just 'stay in' and keep their sexuality to themselves...

i think black people shouldn't tell anyone they're black, either.

I take your point.

Perhaps I am old fashioned but my view is that what people do in the privacy of their own homes, as long as it is legal, is their own business. Whether it is two guys, two girls or even two couples they have the right to sexual freedom. What I dislike is when people parade their sexuality. I think it is distasteful and attracts the wrong kind of attention.

I think the best way to deal with the homophobic brigade is to ignore them. Get on with your life in private and pay no attention. I always find that when you ignore your detractors it not only annoys the hell out of them but they also leave you alone in the end. Entering into some kind of dialogue with these idiots just attracts more attention to their cause.

thing is, it's NOT their own business. too many people make it THEIR business. there's a difference between parading your sexuality, btw, and simply saying 'i'm gay". and it's easy to say ignore the homophobes when you're not dealing with the issues many gay men and women do. bullying, death threats, hate mail, not having the same rights as straights, listening to the comments i'm SURE resonant in the locker room (btw, it's rare that i go for an entire day without hearing at least one gay slur, not directed against me, but certainly it still effects me - "faggot" is a common put down, don't you know).

he came out in a profession in which, from my understanding, gay people are NOT welcome. i think it's incredibly brave and honest.

btw, a little off topic, but not too much - this law was just passed in Kansas:

The law empowers any individual or business to refuse to interact with, do business with, or in any way come into contact with anyone who may have some connection to a gay civil union, or civil marriage or any “similar arrangement” (room-mates?). It gives the full backing of the law to any restaurant or bar-owner who puts up a sign that says “No Gays Served”. It empowers employees of the state government to refuse to interact with gay citizens as a group. Its scope is vast: it allows anyone to refuse to provide “services, accommodations, advantages, facilities, goods, or privileges; counseling, adoption, foster care and other social services; or provide employment or employment benefits” to anyone suspected of being complicit in celebrating or enabling the commitment of any kind of a gay couple.

Actually, you jumped the gun on this one. It passed the house, but was killed in the senate on Friday.

The Kansas Senate decided on Friday that they would kill the legislation that was passed earlier this week by the state’s House of Representatives. The bill, known as House Bill 2453, would have opened the door to widespread segregation and discrimination of those in the LGBT community.
good to know some of our leaders still have some sense.

This is why Dorothy and all her friends went over the rainbow to get away from Kansas!

Seriously though, even if it was defeated in the Senate, the fact remains that it was passed in the first instance to even reach there! Even in USA there remain powers that are prepared to stand up and promote anti gay sentiment!
I think there's a long, long way to go before there is anything like equality!

This amused me in light of this thread.
