For an avatar image, what would be the file size and dimensions of something that would fit well? I do see slight variations in what's actually been used here.

A square image is ideal. Dimensions not too important as it will scale to fit.
Max file size is 1MB, so for quality, you probably want the largest dimensions you can manage while keeping it under 1MB.

The maximum physical size of user avatars is 150 x 150px.
