IIRC, this happens if someone spams you and the mods delete the spammer and their content before you notice it. The spam messages are gone but the badge does not clear. The mods or devs can reset it, I think.
That's just my memory though. A mod can confirm. Perhaps open a support ticket.

You may be able to clear this by going to your Messages and click the 3 dots up in the right hand corner then select "mark all as read". If that doesn't work then I would suggest you open a ticket.
