I got an alert that someone I'm following posted a new story. However, the link to the story is dead (I get the site's custom 404 page). Is the alert going out before the story is verified or something?
Is the story there when you go to the home page? Maybe the author noticed something wrong with it and took it down for editing.

I've noticed sometimes links can also break if the category of the story is changed

Why not read some stories instead

Thanks, but it's working now. It was "Through the Armored Sieve" by Metilda.

Looks like it was recently modified so it had to be re-verified before you could see it again.

Thanks, Angel. Figured it was something like that since it's never happened before.
I've seen that a lot. The link is dead when you click on it but when you go to the author's page it is there.
Sometimes a writer will publish more than one story within 24 hours - in that case, the second story won't go 'live' or onto the front page until 24 hours have passed - to keep any one author from having loads of stories on the front page at the same time, which would be unfair to other contributors (but if you are following them, you will still get a PM)

Also, sometimes a story might be put back in for minor edits after being approved, in which case, it won't go live until it's been approved again

Another thing that can happen is that sometimes the story may be moved to a different category - in which case the link that you get when the story is initially published won't work...

Hope that helps

I think what y'all are seeing happening is that third thing Mazza mentioned about the story being moved to another category. I've noticed that too.
Can someone make Gav aware of this please. He doesn't always get time to read the forums.
