Saw the new Jurassic World. It was, as expected, alright. I would hazard that the premise was better, but intrinsically more flawed. Also Jeff Goldblum had a very small role, and that made me sad. Some good, albeit ham handed jabs at Trump and the failures of government and capitalism in general.

God help me, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is creeping on to my list. The original musical is a nice piece of fluff with some terrific music and production numbers (I'm an ABBA fan from when there was still an ABBA) but the idea of a sequel struck me as a studio cash grab. However, as clips and trailers have been coming out, it's starting to grow on me (yes, I know, there's probably a skin cream for that). It doesn't help that I've been a bit obsessed with ABBA recently, re-engaging with their music in a big way even before I knew the sequel was coming soon.


I'm the only person I know that liked the movie, Mamma Mia. I liked the music, even badly sung, and I liked the story, even poorly acted. And it was in Greece. What's not to like?

See, I acknowledge all the movie's flaws, but it's light, fun and not meant to be taken too seriously. It's a movie that invites you to just roll with it and be entertained for a couple hours. Terrible script? Sure. Slim plot that exists only to string the musical numbers together? Sure but what else is new in a musical? Hammy acting? Sure. Some of them sing so badly your ears bleed (hi, Pierce Brosnan)? Sure. But it all comes together much better than it deserves to.

Elevator pitch: Beautiful (mostly) people sing ABBA songs on a Greek island.

I’ve just seen The Imitation Game. It must be two years old, but I’ve just seen it and it was outstanding! Great (true) story, excellent cast, and wonderfully filmed.

NF Canada has had it for a while but, while I'm a fan of both Neil Gaiman (who wrote the book) and Henry Selick (the writer and director of the movie, also responsible for The Nightmare Before Christmas), I have not yet seen it. Just don't have a lot of time for movie watching anymore. Your reaction suggests that Selick got it right, though.

For those who don't hang out in Rump's, Verbal and I have been oo'ing and ah'ing over the trailer for Godzilla, King of the Monsters, the sequel to the 2014 American version of Godzilla. I enjoyed the first Godzilla and Kong : Skull Island, which is part of the same universe, and the trailer for the next Godzilla looks wonderful.
