Beyond the ken of man
My heart and soul become slight
Taken in by your sight
Elizabeth Barrett Browning from The Portuguese // I love that poem to Robert Browning.... so a male recipient?
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
Beyond the ken of man
My heart and soul become slight
Taken in by your sight
I love your touch, I love your kiss
You take me from agony's abyss.
You lift me high, restore my worth
My love, my life, my renewed birth
Nice to see 2 heavyweights going at it - excellent so far....who's next?
I had the privilege of reading that poem to the assembled congregation at the wedding of my husband's sister a few years ago. Wonderfully expressive words showing, declaring her love for Robert. Love it.
It is so tender, so beautiful I quote it below for lovers of poetry
SONNET XLIII, from THE PORTUGUESE
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, - I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! - and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death
I wouldn't go so far as to class me as a 'heavyweight'. But thank you very much.
I float like a butterfly
In haphazard flight.
Or perhaps
I float like a butterfly
From Ali to Clay
or even
I float like a butterfly
In rings that are square
Come on everyone .. lets have fun with this
Can anyone add ONE further line to EACH of the above?
Neither was I, Insomniac, but it's for fun isn't it !
To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower
To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower
To feel that love is never bland
And argument simply a shower
To have when down, a helping hand
And feel balm from infinite power
To have all this in a happy heart
And join in love, never to part
Is to Be, to See, to Know,
To Live. Eternally.
To see a world in a grain of sand
And heaven in wild flower.
To accomplish 100 simplicities
Before the end of the hour
To hold potential in your hands
that nevermore shall die.
To see a rainbow in the sky
and wonder curiously why?
To see a robin flying high
in endless freedom flight
To feel no stress or worry,
at the end of every night
To while away the hours
in a fit of constant joy
To feel the rushing excitement
as you open a new toy.
To witness real magic
performed right before your eyes
To never doubt in others
never telling silly lies
To dream of the unfathomable
Life's a play ground running wild.
To know true peace and happiness.
This is to be a child.
