BOTH is painful, that's my opinion, fritz. Because if you expect you are considering she might feel the same as you do, and by assuming you pretend to have what you really don't have.
doing both will just make you believe; one is believing on something with no assurance that would happen giving you prolonged agony then the other is believing on something non-existing.

I'd say that assuming hurts more than expecting... cause its like sharing mutual feeling with someone, and you just know you two feel the same and then all of a sudden you find him/her with someone else and tells you that he/she never felt anything greater that friendship and caring... now that is like "me against the world" situation...

Simply because, I cannot assume that someone can read my mind and expect them to do what I am only thinking of having them do.
