Halloween is approaching, so we thought it might be fun to have a story competition to celebrate the occasion.

Competition Theme

Halloween is typically celebrated with costume parties, trick-or-treating, carving pumpkins, ghost stories, going to haunted houses, bonfires, apple bobbing and watching horror movies.

It has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holiday All Saints' Day, but is today largely a secular celebration.

Prizes

Winner: $150 Cash Prize
Second Place: $100 Cash Prize
Third Place: $50 Cash Prize

I'm sure the rest of the writers are happy that Jaymal posted his story already.(Gabrielle and the Devil) I look forward to reading all the submissions, but I don't think I will be competing myself.

I think we need to have a competition schedule outlined at the start of the year, with deadlines highlighted, so people can choose to hold off on submitting various themed stories if they wish to enter them into competitions.

You do yourself a disservice there MrNudie.

Also, in the same way that amateur porn has a wide appeal, perhaps more so than professionally produced porn, so too amateur stories have a large following. Not everyone wants to read highly polished and detailed professionally written stories.

I'm with you Nudie ... Last competition I entered, I got the most votes, 97% of 5's and most comments, but didn't even make it to the top 10! ... Sucks being a mediocre write LOL but I'm used to it... I think this time, I will just leave it to the professionals.

The voting system is weighted so that friends votes do not count as highly as those from surfers or our panel of judges. The latter is the most important factor.

It's to help prevent the impact of any possible manipulation of the scoring system by groups of friends, either logged in or not.

A reminder, only standalone stories can be submitted to any competition - no Part 2, Chapter 2 etc.

The contest he won closed April 16th, so by my count October 16th would be 6 months from then. Since this contest doesn't close until after that, why isn't he eligible? Not trying to be an ass, just trying to understand how the rule is applied.

Question about judging: Is the top ten taken from votes- weighted differently depending on whether or not they are from friends, apparently- and then they are judged anew by the judges alone? Or are the votes somehow factored into it in the end as well?

I thought I remembered somebody telling me that in the last competition, the judges decided the winners among the top 10 vote-getters that had been assembled.

I haven't written any stories since December, although I waited a long time to post those. Like I said previously, I have no intention of entering the competition. I'm a curious person, I like understanding how things work. I saw something I didn't understand, and asked for clarification.
