For our next competition along these lines, I'll thinking of encouraging as much foul play as possible.

A free-for-all competition where chaos ensues. Dirty tricks, slur campaigns, vote bombing, slagging off stories in comment areas etc.., all actively encouraged.

Please...please...please don't do that. We wouldn't know where fantasy meets reality if that happened.

Maybe a competition where one lushie has to fuck another in a story - that may be interesting? It has to be someone they don't know that well though, and the winner is the one that gets it most right, when judged byu the other lushie.

I used to be a pervert. In here, I'm normal!

Loving the new avatar Ping

Liz did a fantastic job with it. I love it... for the rest of the comp it’ll be up.

If I knew how to do it, I’d like a lovely pink glass butt plug pic with M.E.G.A. engraved on the circular stop. I’d post it on, ahem, many, many profiles to help get the 19 more votes the story needs to reach 100.
I'm thinking I might get some merchandise made up for my story too.

Someone commented that they liked the hashtags in my story, so I thought I might get them printed on some tie-in merchandise.

Like this for example.

Or even this

What do you think?

O.M.G. Thank you so much.

I shall call her, Rose, as in Rosebud, and we have plans...

I've greatly enjoyed the stories in the competition so far, they're well written and pretty darn good. My question is that it seems weighted for those with large followings. Newer members don't seem to have the notariety to have the voters and comments. Now, I know my story isn't good enough for much but the experience has been a great learning one. Would it make sense to have all who enter comment/vote on all other entries?

What you learn in life is important; those you help learn are more.
I've tried to read, vote and comment on all the other entries, but it's quite a commitment, even with flash fiction. I still have a few to go!

Just as an aside: with any comp, I don't like to read the other entries until mine has been submitted. It's just a superstition I guess, but also stops me getting put off if someone else has had a similar idea to mine.

Spot on, Annie. I seldom, if ever, read a competition entry until I complete my own. Then I will begin reading and scoring as I please. I will simply say straight out that I have scored every contestant in the contest already. They all received a 5.

The ones I have taken time to read and comment on are typically friends and followers of mine. I never fail to read and comment on someone who has done the same for me. Since I am not a judge I am not expected to read and evaluate every entry.

For a writer to succeed on a site like this they should be willing to give some love to other authors. And expect that if they are not talented, or are not willing to practice, learn, and get better over the weeks and years, that they won't get the following they seek.

After a week of not feeling very well and now feeling much better. I have finally got my entry finished and submited. Hope everyone reads and votes on my entry and hope everyone enjoys reading my story.

If you all read and vote i may revel a secret about myself that I haven’t revealed before.

Here’s my entry

Every competition is a learning experience. If you read all entries, you can see many different styles and perspectives, and if you can glean something from each, you are a better writer for it. If you want to improve, like so many of us endeavor to, read past competition stories, especially those that made the podium and those that received EP's and RR's. Again, learn from those that have been successful. There is no one formula for success. But sticking to the same-old style that has not been successful, is an excellent recipe for the opposite of want you want.

As a rule, as Annie stated below, many writers (not all, but many) prefer to complete and submit their stories prior to reading other competition entries. For me, I don't want to be influenced by something I've read. There are two stories that I have partially written that I stopped and am sitting on, because other writers submitted stories with some similarities to mine. They are certainly not the same story, but nonetheless, my stories sit with respect for the other writer and their story, and until I feel enough time has passed that my story can move forward. Last year, for example, BrownCoffee posted a story that had a wall as a major component. I informed her that I too have a 'wall' story, just so she knew that I wasn't copying her story or success. I've yet to publish mine, but it is very different. I think we must be respectful of our fellow scribes.

Keeping with that theme...

You've hit the nail on the head. In a perfect cyber world, every contestant would read, vote, and comment on all of their fellow competitor's stories. There exists camaraderie with competitions. A few writers consistently do this because it does take a lot of time. Wannabewordsmith, when he can, is a prime example of making the time and doing good. Sure, it's great for him because some then read his story too. Those that receive his time should absolutely appreciate it. He's an amazing writer. But he doesn't do it solely for the rub-my-back reciprocation. Many writers like him comment on stories to support their fellow writers, especially those that have shown a desire to, and have exhibited, a marked improvement with their story writing abilities. Elizabeth Black, who recently received an Awesome Badge, is another tireless supporter of many writers here. There is ALWAYS something good to comment about in a story, even if the story is poorly conceived and/or written. Look for the silver lining.

So, does it make sense for all contestants to read, vote, and comment on each other's stories?

Yes.

Do that. Be kind with your comments. If you have questions, concerns, or really dislike something and feel the need to comment on it, address those concerns in private. Be respectful. PM the writer. If they are rude to you, you then have one less writer to concern yourself with. One time, GreenMan asked a question about a competition story of mine. I proceeded to respond in kind, and after I sent my response, I realized that my explanation was longer that the damn story. Clearly, I could have configured my complicated, twisty-turny plot better. Oops. My bad, not his or the other readers'.

Lastly, the numbers can be a reflection of time poorly spent here The longer one has been part of the community, the more one has read and commented on the stories, the more one has posted on other's profiles, the more, the more, the more... the more likely you'll have more people interested in reading your stuff. Plus, writing good stuff helps.

Do keep in mind, this is a unique competition format. I sense many will better appreciate the judging formula Nicola has in place for competitions. We don't want competitions to be a popularity contest. We want quality and creativity to rise to the top. But tongue-between-cheeks, forcing one to whore (AKA promote) their story is both fun and annoying. You decide what you are comfortable with. This comp is about fun, and for those that want it, learning, as all competitions should be.

I'll step down from my soap box now.

What she said, except for the superstition part.
I'd read 3 or 4 before I decided to enter a story. About the same time Darkside suggested that I enter a story. I think I've read and commented on every story so far. Many have returned the favor and I've noticed that several of my other stories have had more views, votes and comments. I never new what the judging system was and I should've do my due diligence about that, so my bad. For me it's a respect thing. If a writer is willing to put their work out there, exposed to the winds and currents of others, that's a big thing. Then to write a full story in 1000 words is even tougher. I feel each participant deserves my vote and comment. A good writer is also a good reader.

What you learn in life is important; those you help learn are more.
What Ping wrote is spot on. I won't bother to add to it. There are lots of different types of people here. Those that never reply to a comment post, perhaps they never bother to look once the story is up. Those that never read others stories or comment on them. Those that score but don't comment and those that comment but don't score.

I have taken the viewpoint that if someone comments on my stories i will always reply. Sometimes that has led to conversations. And they, in turn, have led to friendships.

I have learnt a lot from other authors. How they write, what they say and how to be emotional. Theses facets don't always appear in my stories but I learn from them.

In a competition I will always read and score those that have read and scored mine. That is just respect. I do try and read other stories as well but it depends on time and length of stories. I still have a few to go in this competition, but I am hoping to get through all of them and comment and score.

I find it amusing that different people read and comment on different authors. Why don't they read everyone's? I have 424 followers apparently, yet I struggle to get high votes.

A big factor is the throughput of stories. They are being published faster and faster and hence spends less time on the main board. That's a fact of life. Nothing can be done about it.

That's down to the popularity of the site. Nothing to do with notoriety.

I used to be a pervert. In here, I'm normal!

damn Ping you just wrote an entire book in a forum thread!!
but spot on!! smile

I try to read and comment and vote on every story, Its supportive and I know how I feel when I don't get votes or comments
so I like to make sure that everyone at least gets mine..
As for weighted for people with large followers ( I only have 86 followers and I gained two from this comp, and many of my followers haven't been around in ages )
As a follow up to my previous posting on this subject I wanted to add that even though I have 382 followers it is a virtual certainty that many are not true followers. They don't read my work for the simple reason that some have left and others have declined to read much at all.

When I sent out the broadcast message requesting my followers to give me a vote to add to my score I was really hoping to get about 10 percent of my followers to do so. Nothing like that happened. During the two days after that request I believe I got perhaps half a dozen new votes. Some from folks who were not my followers.

Now I've voted on everyone so far. And I had the time so I went ahead and finished doing the commenting on the ones I hadn't done yet. Everyone has been to Dr. Green_Man for his honest checkup.

Now we will relax for a while and watch for the stragglers yet to enter a story for the contest. Best of luck, little Lushies.
just so you all know, i am currently in first place.

Why? WHY? Why set me up this way?

I’ll just say it. Sloppy seconds.
I'm trying to catch on to this contest. I hope I'm getting closer to the idea.
kisses, amy
Definitely not in, but I'm enjoying reading the entries. Haven't hit many yet but I hope to find some time for more on the weekend. Kee's Western entry is great, BTW.

Tell you what, G-man owes me a M.E.G.A hat. Vote for my story and it is yours. The butt plug will go to another willing participant voting for mine.

Sounds fair to me.

Cheers, all.
