I would expect that ckeditor - the freely available script employed in the edit box - uses some system to count words in real time during the editing phase. But once posted and our Lush gavorithm takes over to display the word count on the home page / in the story, that determines the count slightly differently. A hyphen here, a double-quote or other punctuation mark there could make all the difference.
Doubt there's much can be done about it, short of porting the ckeditor algorithm from Javascript to whatever runs the Lush back-end (ASP I assume). Lot of work for minimal gain.
