I have just updated the requirements so that this badge only required 30,000 views. Maybe when I have more time I will look at different scales for this badge.

Stories within the most popular list have the highest average score, with at least 10 votes.

Votes are only removed when someone leaves or is removed from the site.

Hope this helps
gav

which is why i keep careful tabs on people who voted for mine - if they even think of leaving, i get the bribes going. smile

Hi,

Why did someone mention that stories attract the most readers? I cannot imagine why? My story has attracted almost 300,000 readers, do I get 10 badges?
Interesting conclusion Tracey!

Well done, that's a massive amount of views, and a really appreciative audience looking at the score and # comments.
Question: if I view my own story, does that count as a view? Does the view ticker go up? I've been wondering this for a while.

yes, but it only goes up one no matter HOW often you view it, so don't just start clicking on it over and over LOL

This topic on achieving Famous Story Requirements has certainly sparked a lot of talk and many suggestions including: platinum, gold, silver, diamond, even tortoise rankings.

I believe the wonderful Lush Admin with such people as Nicola, et al should create a competition with a level playing field for all interested writers. Why not have Lush start a formal competition amongst all the egotistical writers (as well as amateur fun writers) where Lush nominate a Title and a category. In that way there will be no class distinction and no title that stands out from any other title to trick people into reading their story. The competition should be open for 4-8 weeks, submitted and all entries posted within 2-3 days of each other. After a 3 month period, then find out who the top 1% or 5% of the writers are; and give them a special award.

The viewers, readers, members, fly-by curious will all be the judges. Is that a good idea Nicola?
Good idea Tracey, but first, our mobile launch competition will soon be announced

Can you give any hints or details about this new competition? You have got my interest Nicola.

Yes, i really AM opening this back up again. as a story mod, i watch how fast stories get published and processed through here. stories that might have once spend some time on the front page are usually gone within 12 hours, usually less. i don't track other people's stories, but i DO track mine. as time goes on, and we get more and more writers, i know i get less and less views and i think that i'm a fairly noticable author here? funny, i get more votes and comments, but breaking 2,000 has been difficult. sure, we have more members, but we have way more writers as well and i think it makes it harder to even hit the old goal of 30,000 let alone 100,000 (or is it 60,000? i'm not sure).

anyways, just wanted to point that out and maybe, take a look at it and see if, in a years time, ANY one's hit that famous author mark. i'm guessing that it's a badge that may very well have become extinct. just my POV, obviously, but it would be nice to have an obtainable goal rather then do what most of us have done, shrug our shoulders and say 'oh, well. we missed the window for getting that one'.

Actually, the story that Stephanie and I co-wrote us almost at the 30,000 mark...

The client on the sixth floor

(I am a shameless whore, aren't I?)

Assumes the position... AGAIN!

God, I dunno if my ass can take much more!!

(in fairness, I think most of the hits are from him lol)

lol - congratulations and well deserved. thing is:

1 -that's rare.
2 - good luck doubling that - as time goes on, views tend to taper off dramatically, even if you've got an EP or whatever.
3 - good luck replicating that, no matter how good or popular your stories are. i have one that hit 28,000 - after that a few at 20,000, and they have been around a while and gotten a lot of buzz at the time. now, i'm pretty happy to hit over 5,000 (i could, of course, start resorting to all father/daughter first time stories if i was really serious about it *giggles*).

I agree with Sprite about the views. Not including poems, which I think is a niche all of its own, only four out of my eight stories have gone over the 2000 reads mark. I do think the category makes a huge difference, so writers who tend to write for a less-read category will certainly find the Famous Story badge difficult to obtain (whatever that mark may be). Only one story has come close to a number I never thought I would reach, and that only shot up since a certain situation made it possible. But it is very clear that if, in four months, a story can reach nearly 10,000 views, however that might have been achieved, it may be worth believing that something like 30,000 is possible - as Mazza and Steph have already shown.

The question that brings up for me is, a story that gets so many hits because it is an Editors' Pick (speaking from my own experience, nobody else's), has already been rewarded. The real challenge would be to obtain something like a 30,000 mark without an Editors' Pick! And I don't believe I could manage anything close to that without it. I have only two other stories that might hit 10,000, but it would need well over a year and a lot of forum whoring on my part (or Sprite's if I can convince her to do some video demonstrations on my behalf).

I'd be interested to see if any of our more popular writers agree have seen a similar pattern. 28,000 gets a flower from me!

I am now bamboozled with numbers and I have forgotten what I was saying. So here is a famous story (sans voyeuristic orgies) to make sure I am still on-thread...

I have 6 stories that are over 30,000 views, with my EP one being close to 70,000 views I have a 7th story that's at 26,000 views so it's slowly creeping up there too. Many of my others are around the 20,000+ view-mark at the moment as well.

Most of my stories are in the reluctance and categories.

Ah, so it is achievable (if one is an amazingly top writer combined with being an amazingly hot lass combined with being amazingly wise - stop being amazing, you're making me look bad). Top stuff, that's awesome!

my EP/contest winner hit 20,000. YOUR EP wouldn't, if the target still stands at 100,000? ( i am still unclear about that) be eligible after the rule change - certainly, none of your others would, and you are probably one of THE most visible/popular/talented writers here.

Thanks Shylass and Sprite for the sweet compliments. smile

I'm not sure what I can suggest to other people looking for the badge. I've never been the type to over-promote, but I do use the forum banners which helps draw attention to the stories. I post a lot in the forums so that helps get my name out there. I don't think anyone should ever bother with the idea that posting naked pics of themselves is needed to gain popularity. I really don't think it's worth it. My stories are all quite long - as much as people say that long stories are less popular or less likely to be read, maybe it's just the opposite? Not sure. Anyway, I'm grateful to those that have viewed and voted and liked my stories. I know that it's definitely a motivating factor for every writer.
To be honest, I'm finding it an uphill struggle to get 3000 views, never mind 30000. It's a badge I fear I'll never obtain even if I become as good a writer as Sprite. Not complaining, just lamenting.

I think the FBI is reading my stories and following me around or is it Gav's kid?

My story "Schoolgirl Dares with Sarah" is slowly, slowly creeping towards 30,000 (28,510 this afternoon), and it wasn't an Editor's Pick - nor is it an story!

None of my stories have been lucky enough to acheive the Editor's Pick accolade; I did have a look at some of those that did, to see if I was doing something wrong, but couldn't spot anything obvious. So I'll just carry on writing whatever turns me on, and hopefully one day I'll strike lucky with an Editor who likes the same sort of thing!
