Not a site announcement, but the post will get buried elsewhere!

I'd like to take this opportunity to help publicise and draw attention to International Women's Day.

International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8 every year to commemorate the movement for women's rights. For 2018, International Women’s Day comes on the heels of unprecedented global movement for women’s rights, equality and justice. This has taken the form of global marches and campaigns, including #MeToo and #TimesUp in the United States of America and their counterparts in other countries, on issues ranging from sexual harassment and femicide to equal pay and women’s political representation. In this context, the UN theme for the 2018 International Women’s Day is “Time is Now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives”.

I wholeheartedly agree with this comment:

"Achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls is the unfinished business of our time, and the greatest human rights challenge in our world."

— UN Secretary-General, António Guterres

This is a special day for me. I always remember it.

I second that agreement. Thanks for posting something about this where it will get seen.

Canada's Governor-General's Performing Arts awards, one of the highest honours for artists in this country, were announced today and, happily, lots of women on the list. Including my second favorite identical twins (my favorites are some old school friends):

To paraphrase one of their most famous hits, "Every woman is awesome!"

All my best to the women of Lush and I hope that this uphill battle for equality reaches its peak soon.
i thought every day was women's day...

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

My youngest daughter doesn't approve of Int'l Women's Day. She thinks it's sexist. She knows the arguments as to why it is important, including she is in a place of incredible privilege to even be able to truly believe something like that. But she gets to think what she thinks (within reason).

She is, similarly, the only member of the family who doesn't approve of #blacklivesmatter, for essentially the same reason, that...say it with me...all lives matter. She knows all my arguments as to why I find that movement important too.

Anyway. Just throwing that out there.
@ Verbal, in many ways, I agree with your daughter’s thinking.

Neither of these “special” days should need to exist in the first place, which is precisely the point in them. Almost paradoxical!

Yeah, it's funny. This is off topic but my parents were always vehemently opposed to Mother's and Father's days. If I were to take my mum flowers this weekend she would reject them (and me) but any other weekend is fine. The commercialisation of it all kinda shallows it too but thankfully I haven't seen any IWD or BLM bouquets yet lol

I did make sure I wore purple today in honor of International Women's Day. However, like having months to honor certain groups (Black History month, Native American month, etc.) or special days should hopefully one day become a thing of the past. Maybe one day we'll look back and say, "Wow! We had to have a month for people to realize how awesome these groups were. How silly."
