I'm seriously having difficulty understanding what the animosity is towards an award, which was set up to help highlight stories considered way above the norm.

It's a white tick on a blue background. It can be changed to any design whatsoever.

Some people really do need to get out more.
I have nothing to do with admin, but I just wanted to say I like the recommended check mark. It's attention getting and simple, conveys its intent. Also Thank you thank you thank you to whomever recommended my tale Bound in Pleasure. Wow. I feel honored, seriously.

I just want to weight back in and say the symbol is growing on me. I actually think it looks better on profiles than on the homepage, but it is growing on me and is certainly attention getting!

fyi - it's been changed to the above. ok, i am outta here.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

OMG I HATE it, I'm never submitting anything of mine again.

As for me, I like the thumbs-up much more than the check mark. Thanks.

regardless of what the symbol is ... I was/am very honoured to receive the RR. I would NEVER ask for it to be hidden.
Although I value feedback, this thread is not the primary reason it was changed.

I liked the thumb better from the off, and seeing the ticks on the site, reminded me of the reasons I wasn't keen on the tick in the first place.

Excellent work on the graphic Liz, thank you

I think it would be nice that if I saw a Recommended Read award on a story that I could see which Moderator recommended the story and why the Moderator thinks the story is outstanding.

Why?

Why?

I think this is similar to my idea above...

maybe it could include the mod's comment as a "roll-over" to say why it's recommended - in the same way you'd see critics' praises on the back of a book.

What could be wrong with that?

Stories are given RR's because the mod thought they were exceptional or particularly well written. That's what the award says, is there really a need to say more?

Besides if the mod wants to say more, they can put it in the comments section of the story.

From what I understand, it's one mod's definition of "exceptional and well-written" rather than a consensus as with the Editors' Choice. If I'm looking at a story that's been recommended by someone whose writing I like, I'd be more inclined to read it than one that was recommended by someone whose writing style I don't enjoy so much - and there are mods who fall into both categories for my tastes. I'm more inclined to go and see a film recommended by The Independent than a film recommended by Nuts Magazine.

As this is a personal recommendation from one person, that recommendation should be personalised - like a book jacket or a film poster. Anything to encourage someone to click it open.

So basically if you don't like the mod's writing, then you're not going to read something they recommend? Yet another reason why I think the system is fine as is.

Someone's writing and their tastes are not necessarily the same. I don't write many poems, but there are some writers who write them exceptionally well and have been given an RR by me for that. Also, I'm neither a lesbian, nor do I write lesbian stories, but I've given an RR to a story containing lesbians, a good writer is a good writer regardless of the subject. The tags, the category and the tagline should already give you a good idea of whether the story is something you would enjoy reading if you're browsing through the RR section. I don't see what a mod's writing has to do with what you think of their taste.

I'm saying that if I read stories that you recommend and I find them to be not exceptional (IN MY OPINION) I'd probably be less inclined to follow your recommendation in future. If on the other hand I read them and liked them I'd be more inclined to think "Oh wow, OWA recommends it, she generally likes the stuff I do". You could even extend it so readers could follow individual mods recommendations in the same way that we can follow authors.

Good writing isn't solely about content and categories: some authors prefer long, sweeping, intricate plot-lines others have a poetic, adjective-heavy style - both of which i can take or leave but I can respect that other people may love that stuff - including mods.

You have a point there, but it still could go the other way and a good story shouldn't be passed up because someone doesn't like the taste of the person who recommended it, or the person themselves. We've had issues in the past where a mod rejects a story and that author gets mad and gives the mod's story low scores. I wouldn't want for that to extend beyond my stories and for them to be able to go to the RR section and attack stories that I've recommended.

The award is about encouraging readership, the fact that a story is in the RR section means that it's exceptional. To me, who recommended it shouldn't matter to anyone except the person who received it.

I didn't say anything was wrong with it. I was just wondering why that member thought that was a good idea, or why it would be useful.

I am able to see who recommended a particular story, and usually that moderator will have left a comment on the story. However, none of that usually has any bearing on whether or not I read the story.

It's like you're asking moderators to justify their actions and I don't really see why they should do that, but am happy to listen to your views on the matter.

Also, I'm happy to give a full list of all the stories that I personally recommended.

Quite right, we have nothing to hide, but I don't see it as a necessity.
