Question about chat window

I just want to know if it is just me or if this is just normal. Please don't think I am complaining. I am just wondering.

When I am on msn or IM, if someone is typing a message it comes up that well so and so is typing... But in the chat windows here, I often don't see any message that the person is typing. So I sit there and wait then start typing something again and next thing I know a message from the person appears in the window, so I have to delete what I was about to say and start again.

There also appears to be a lag in time that the messages appear. Sometimes the other person has left the conversation before my message appears. So I leave then they try to chat with me again. Sometimes I just give up and feel bad for the other person who then thinks I don't want to talk to them.

I have a year old pc with 4gb of memory, firefox browser and I am on a broadband connection. So I would like to know if it is something to do with my settings, my browser, timing or is it just a server problem? Or am I just being too impatient?
I have a similarly equipped laptop as your machine, across a broadband connection as well.

I don't noticed any issues with the few people whom I chat with. Perhaps there was some trepidation on both ends of the chat window - when I first began becoming acquainted with the women I sometimes chat with, which might explain some of the lag-time between replies.

But you're right - the chat software here does not behave like that of AIM/AOL or or MSN or ICQ...where it gives you feedback that the person you're engaged in chat with...is actually still in session with you - or - is replying.

It's like 1997 chat. But it is free.

For me, when the person starts typing, a message indicates that, but if they are typing a long message then the "____ is typing" indicator disappears before their response gets to me.

I've also noticed that sometimes people will disappear from conversations with the chat window telling both people that the other one left the conversation.

On one occasion I've even had someone come back after supposedly leaving the conversation. The chat option definitely isn't perfect, but I've been here long enough to remember when we didn't even have it, so I take it despite its flaws.
Having completed around 80% of the new chat rooms, and discovered a lot of these bugs along the road.

When it says xxxx is typing a message, it simple means they have depressed a key (poor key). This key could be the back space, which means there will be no message coming from that user.

I have put up a beta room of my new chat rooms. I still havent added any moderator functionality, so have to be nice in there! Hopefully this will fix a lot of these issues, especially the block one!

Do you have beta testers sorted out? That room needs a password.
Yes I do, I'll be sending the password out to these people.
Where's mine? You know how much I like breaking things
I just want to thank everyone for their replies! I wasn't expecting responses so quickly. It could be just my isp or the fact that I am downloading movies constantly.

I noticed this morning when I logged on that there was a new chat room, can't wait to check it out!

Again thank you!

What!?!

If Nic's going to dive in - I'd like to be there to witness the occasion. Can I have a password too, Gav?

Sure you can, just be gentle with her okay!

I've posted in the mods forum the password.

So gav = codemonkey = software designer? if so who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks!

Gav once it is open to the general members for testing, I would happily put my name down for a tester. I know I am new here but I would like to help out as I have used other chat rooms at other sites (and promise I won't upset any keys in there ) and maybe offer some advice, that is, if it is needed.
