Should voting be compulsory

Iv'e only been on the site for around a week, and i know this question has probably been asked loads of times but

SHOULD VOTING BE COMPULSORY IF YOU READ A STORY?

I think my main problem is that we writers spend alot of time and effort creating these erotic fictions. ( dont get me wrong we enjoy doing it )

For an example, my latest story has had 2300+ views in the last 24 hours and iv'e only received 11 votes. All those pretty much coming from authors I would imagine.

My point is, it would be a useful tool to help improve our writing. Most of the 2300 people are probably not writers and are here for tittalation. So to get an average of what they think, would give the writer an idea if the sort of stuff they were writing, was hitting the mark!

I appreciate that everybody is not reading the whole story and it may be a little inconvenient for them, but considering the effort that the writer has put in, a simple vote hardly requires any effort at all.

Would like to hear what my fellow writers think.

Im curious to hear on how exactly you suggest we make it compulsory.

I think its a bad idea, people come here because its free and fun, forcing them to vote will scare them off.
I take your point, and in no way would i want to do that.

The whole point of the post is to ask the question and have a disscusion.

Maybe the better way would be to have a pop up window when you navigate away from the page. just a polite 'have you voted for this story as feedback is important' something like that?
I agree with what Necho said I don't think it should be something you should HAVE to do sure would be nice but like she said it would probably scare people away. Me personally I would rather have someone and again I wouldn't want it to be something you would HAVE to do is to leave a comment and lemme know how they liked it.
Just been looking on the main home page, and the main story page. Although there are obviously box's etc where you can vote and leave comment's, I don't think a little notice to say ' please take the time to vote and comment as feedback is important to the writer' would be asking too much would it?

As you said bikebum1975 ' sure would be nice ' and i'm positive most people that write would love the feedback. After all thats how we become better writers.

I've been doing this a long time Tenzi, and if you get 1 in 100 people to vote, you're doing very well. Comments are even fewer and far between.

There is no way to force anyone to do anything on a site like this, without causing some degree of friction. One thing we did do was make sure people who leave comments have to be members, there were a lot of negative anonymous comments going on previously.

A little polite note as you mentioned re feedback could be a good idea, I'm not sure where it would go though. Let me think about it.

Welcome to Lush
Can't say any fairer then that Nicola

I understand now that getting votes/comments is hard work, that was the reason for my post.

As a newbie to this it is a little frustrating not to get much feedback whether good or bad. As I mentioned, I believe it's quite important to use the feedback to improve and hone your skills

Thanks for you all taking the time to comment, it's very much appreciated.

I will go take a lOOk at your stories...I'm not a writer; I have voted and commented on many stories here. I also I have been fair in my process. Now you do bring up good ideas here, and as Nicole said, "1 in 100 people to vote, you're doing very well." that's pretty much the norm.
Perhaps the true value to an author is the number of times the story has been viewed or read rather than the <1% of the people who vote and comment.. maybe 1 vote for every thousand views.. with a top end of 10... those who find a story of exceptional quality will still comment.. just a thought...
I really love the comments, but believe that if you are forced to leave one or constantly reminded, you are going to get comments like "yeah good" and "whatever" lol. People leave comments only because they feel that the story is exceptionally good (or bad) and that goes for scoring. And in my honest opinion, to be reminded about voting and scoring would be like being constantly reminded to pay a bill. You end up doing it but only grudgingly

I also don't believe that views is an indication of how well a story is going. I have gone into a story, read the first paragraph, then thought the story was not to my liking so left but that still counts as a view. Also it really depends on when it was submitted and naturally which category.

When I first entered my one and only story so far in the earth day competition, I found it it a pleasure NOT knowing the average score and seeing the votes. The comments alone were wonderful to the extent that I really didn't care about the scoring. I was on top of the world .....

But since then, I have managed to find out the amount of scores and what the average score is. And to be honest, my pleasure dropped a little. My story is doing fine but not as fine as I first thought going by the comments. So now I am grounded and miss being in the not knowing....

The motto here is, you can never be happy with the system, so just enjoy the writing!

If it's a competition entry, these details should be unavailable to everyone except Gav and myself. Can you pm me how you found out, if there's a loophole, it needs plugging.
Sent you a pm nicola!

Tenzindali, the problem with a thread like this is you could also ask if people should be forced to vote in a general election! The problem you have is everyone has different opinions, some people dont like to share there opinions, others will get off to what you have wrote and others will take one look and move on etc, maybe a good idea would be to write at the beginning of your story (please kindly take a minute to vote as your score will help me in working out an average (or whatever your motive is) to make me a better writer or what your views are........as Bob Marley famously stated, (You can't please all of the people all of the time.
Tenzi, count yourself lucky that by not forcing votes, that the results are still SOMEWHAT a true reflection of how your story is received (balance vs. everyone's pals giving generally favorable scores)....if it were forced, then the knucklehead factor would come into play as well...

NiteAngel, I didn't know Bob Marley was responsible for that quote....but I do recall this one from a favorite (sadly deceased) comedian:

"You know, you can't please all the people all the time... and last night, all those people were at my show." -Mitch Hedberg

OK I didn't say he was responsible for the quote I said as he famously stated. It's in one of his songs...
I'll let Rush answer this one for me:

If you choose not to decide
You still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears
And kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that's clear-
I will choose free will

What's wrong with just enjoying a story?

What's wrong with just enjoying a story?

Exactly!!!!
Thanks to all of you for the comments. You are all, of course, right in what you say. I am talking from a selfish(ish) point of view in regards to what I can learn from the comments, which would improve the stories that I write.

I accept that compulsory commenting may be counter productive and I think the idea of putting a notice at the start of the story is a great one! ( I will do that)

It would still be nice to see a little polite notice on the home page asking people to vote or comment. The stories that I have read on this site are really good, obviously alot of time and effort goes into creating them, and I think alot of people would comment if there was a reminder. This can not only benefit the writer but also ultimately, benefit the site as a whole because you would have constantly improving writer's submitting better stories.

Once again Thanks All
