It's a fucking marketing hype machine that has leaked out of the US to infest the rest of the world. I don't think I heard of it prior to maybe 2000 or later. Up here, Boxing Day used to be the big commercial event. I have rarely bought stuff on that day, let alone Black Friday. There are some good deals on both, but usually on big ticket items like TVs that I only buy once in a blue moon.
