Coffee bean to cup machine recommendations?

I have become increasingly aware of the environmental impact of the plastic Nespresso coffee pods and am looking to instead buy a "bean to cup" machine. I tried the stainless steel pod replacements, but the coffee is terrible. You just can't pack enough in them for it to work properly.

Coffee is one of my few indulgences, so I'm prepared to splash out in the Xmas sales.

Who has / used one and which do you recommend?

This is the latest offering from Gaggia. Its terribly expensive but apparently it makes a super cuppa!

I believe John Lewis sell it.

that looks amazing, SJ.

The one I have is so old they don't make it any more. It's a DeLonghi Perfecta ESAM 5400. I've had it maybe 6 or 7 years, I think... at least, and it's still going strong, so if I was getting another I'd be happy enough sticking with that brand.

Pretty sure we got in in the January sales and it was just shy of £300 at the time.

Plus points - it makes espresso, americano and lattes easily. I generally just take my coffee straight up, but hubby likes a latte now and again.

Downside is it's really big and it's bloody noisy. I think the sound of the beans grinding wakes me up more than the caffeine does. But it is old, so newer models might not be as bad.

Edit:

Looks great John. Bigger than my kitchen!

Thanks Jen. Space is a bit of a constraint in my kitchen. The quieter the better too!

More things to consider.
@Jen: That looks like one of those poncey Bang & Olufsen stereos from the 90s! Does it play music as well, when it's not waking you up with a grind-on?

Yes, out of all the reviews I've gone through so far, this is the best value: https://www.amazon.co.uk/DeLonghi-Magnifica-ESAM-4200-S-Silver/dp/B001EOMZ5E/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=sl1&tag=dailyespresso-21&linkId=2fbc0306390302a434c16d71d201c57b&language=en_GB&th=1

De'Longhi seem to still make some of the best machines in the business.

should ask Tam, too. she knows things about coffee and stuff. *nods*

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.
