If you have had an affair, why would you not end the marriage?
Many reasons:

The affair would not be as exciting if it became no longer illicit.

Why hurt your spouse if he/she is happy in the marriage? You have what you need.

Divorce is expensive, messy, and emotionally wrenching. I've seen it so often.

By the way, I've never been married, and never intend to, because I've watched my friends suffer through these very decisions.
Both of my ex-husbands cheated on me and I tried to save the marriage. The first for the sake of my son, but he wasn't interested. The second because I was blinded by love. He was too busy fucking someone I once called my friend. Even our marriage councilor told me to let it go.

I was the one who had to file for the divorce because neither would pony up the money. The first was a longer fight due to the child in question... the second threatened to get a lawyer until I pointed out I wanted nothing but the damn divorce. I only told him that not because he could afford a lawyer (because he really couldn't) but because I knew his bitch mother could... and would.

Ironically... when I married my 3rd and final husband (whom I'm still married to) one unfriended me on all social media platforms (that made me laugh) and the other left the state. I couldn't help but laugh at either one. #1 said he had to leave early for a family reunion which he didn't even stay for... and the other claimed he was hoping for a 2nd chance (not ever gonna happen).

Now, for those who survive an affair... I applaud them. I used to say I wish I had... but now I know better. I have better.

This plus "financial" considerations. Its rough living in an admitted loveless marriage feeling trapped because of no way to be financially fair. Advanced age (late 60's, early 70's) and "pride" are binding considerations also. I really see no way out.
