Jr hockey coach suspended for one year and the team fined $2000 for skipping the opening ceremony of a tournament. The team only agreed to play in the tournament if the coach allowed them to study for their upcoming final exams.

Coach suspended for 1 yr for allowing students to study?

I think the lack of common sense is beginning to spread.

I think it's funny they let him go ahead with it all AFTER he told them the team would be missing the opening and closing ceremonies because of exams...

If they told him it wasn't acceptable from the get go, he would've pulled the team and the tournament would be out the fee for joining the tournament.
Instead they TAKE the entrance fee and then find the excuses for missing part of the ceremonies unacceptable a month later and then FINE him?
In Canada, it never surprises me how low they will go to make a buck (and I live here).
Its just another cash grab.
honestly, after this, if i was a team, i'd boycott the whole event from now until eternity - apparently being at the ceremony is was more important then getting an education. great message to send. we'd never do something like that in the US, you know *rolls eyes*

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

this leaves me without words. i mean honestly. ceremony has its time and place, but to ban a coach for promoting education over athletics? that's just so backwards it actually makes sense in today's world. in my school, the athletes were worshiped by the faculty and could never be at fault, were GIVEN grades so they could participate in the sports they picked. we actually had a teacher who wouldn't give any student a grade higher than a C on anything, unless he or she played sports. when this was brought to the school board, nothing happened; he was the coach for the high school football team.
