There's something rather hilarious about this, but also something quite staggering; you're free to comment in any way you want.
So, most of my friends know that I love drinking Irish cream on the rocks when I'm lounging at home in the late evening (ie. Baileys/Carolans). One of them in particular keeps annoying me about this, saying that this isn't quite a 'manly' drink. I really don't care though, to me this is just as silly as claiming that eating a sweet cake is 'unmanly', but it's become a funny running gag between us over time.
This week he sent me an article to prove his point; simply reading the title will make you figure out what this is all about:
In Cameroon, Drinking Baileys And Other 'Feminine Behavior' Can Mean You're Gay And Going To Jail, Lawyer Claims
For those who don't want to read the complete article, last year a man was arrested in Cameroon simply for drinking Baileys, supposedly under Cameroon's 'anti-gay laws'.
At first this made me explode into laugher and I thought 'touché', but then it made me realize how some countries are so far behind concerning gay rights. Seriously, perceiving homosexuality as a crime is already quite lame/dated, but imprisoning men simply for displaying a 'feminine behavior'? I can't even describe how unbelievable this is...
You're free to discuss about this in any way that you want. Do you believe there's such a thing as manly/feminine drinks? Are you surprised, shocked or upset by this? Do you think there's any hope for gay rights in these countries?
