with greedy wealthy people.

LONDON – Even a monarch needs a little help from time to time — especially when the cost of heating those drafty old palaces spirals past $1.5 million a year.

But a request for assistance from a government fund that provides subsidized heating to low-income Britons has caused a spot of bother for Queen Elizabeth II, long one of the world's wealthiest women.

Her Majesty's application in 2004 was politely turned down by the government — in part because of fear of adverse publicity — and quietly forgotten until The Independent newspaper published the correspondence Friday after obtaining it via a Freedom of Information request.
The government spends a fortune keeping up her residences now. She did take a pay cut this year, but the heat subsidy should go to the poor as was intended.
I agree. I don't think she's really needed anymore is she? She/they don't really run the country anymore. Maybe she could get a job, her and her offspring and give all that money to the people.
Oh I disagree...the monarchy is a tradition in the UK. She does have a job representing the UK to the world. She does a lot of charity gigs and so does the rest of her family. The goverment have spent more on Iraq than the Queen and back in 2004 we weren't in a recession. (grins). I love how the papers have had to go searching back 6 years to get a darn newpaper story. Must be a slow day.

I agree she does do charity work for the country but, she's over paid for it. They could sell off a few of her castles and jewels and feed and clothe a lot of people.
I'm a firm royalist. And I would be annoyed if someone sold my stuff which had been in my family for centuries.
If I had that much money I would be doing a lot of charity stuff myself. And, items garnished through subjugation don't necessarily make it yours.
Be off with thee knaves and leave the good Queen alone. The monarchy, warts and all, still represents all that was good and great about Britain and whilst there is a good case for some 'pruning' of some of the leeches, this particular knight remains a loyal royalist.

Indeed, many jurisdictions who have removed their monarchies only go and replace it with a 'symbolic' Presidential figure that ends up racking bills just as immense and wasteful as the worst royals. I consider the likes of my dear QE II, Queen Beatrice of the Netherlands and King Albert II of Belgium to be perfect role models.

Plus, let's all admit there still remains a romantic aura to the monarchy.

I suppose, if I was at least a Lord myself, then I could overlook the fact that monarchies have downtrodden on my ancestors at every opportunity. lol

On second thought.......I damned well doubt it.

The same GQP demanding we move on from January 6th, 2021 is still doing audits of the November 3rd, 2020 election.
