The problem with poetry is that most people don't care about it thus no market. You might make it, if you were able to find a commercial niche, like Christian poetry, environmental poetry, something where you wrote to please a particular audience, which would make it easier since you could write crap as long as it was the kind of crap you audience would eat up.
There have been poets that write stuff that is as crappy as some popular music and last just as long but until it fades there is money to be made. I have one in mind who has made millions selling sentimental drivel that reads like bad romance novels, but and this is a big but people buy it.
Another reason it is hard to make it as a poet is because just like any art there are gatekeepers, like academics, publishers and critics. I think you just have to go for it and see what happens. There are places where you can read your own work, join workshops etc. There is no direct route from A to B in poetry, at least that I know of.

To be honest No, You need a day job I get paid a little for mine. But nothing to write home about. I donate my earnings. Let me see how much I earn last year ooops nothing to write home about.

If you are both a novelist and a poet, that could be a way to make something off of your writings. But solely a poet, as was mentioned above it is pretty hopeless to live off of the paltry proceeds.
Look in your local periodicals and become a columnist, it might open some doors.
