Most people regards poetry as a hobby, or something some authors do in order to show they can write poetry besides writing novels.
But can a poet pay the bills by writing only poetry?
You should write to Maya Angelou and ask her.

Mary Oliver, one of my favorites, is one poet who sells a lot of books, most poets have day jobs. William Carlos Williams was family doctor for example and Charles Bukowski was a drunk.
The problem with poetry is that most people don't care about it thus no market. You might make it, if you were able to find a commercial niche, like Christian poetry, environmental poetry, something where you wrote to please a particular audience, which would make it easier since you could write crap as long as it was the kind of crap you audience would eat up.
There have been poets that write stuff that is as crappy as some popular music and last just as long but until it fades there is money to be made. I have one in mind who has made millions selling sentimental drivel that reads like bad romance novels, but and this is a big but people buy it.
Another reason it is hard to make it as a poet is because just like any art there are gatekeepers, like academics, publishers and critics. I think you just have to go for it and see what happens. There are places where you can read your own work, join workshops etc. There is no direct route from A to B in poetry, at least that I know of.
I always get her mixed up with Toni Morrison a American female author. Brilliant woman, she wrote 'The Bluest Eyes'. Only a small book to read, but it is one book I always still think aboout.
Maya Angelou also wrote 'I know why the cage bird sing' Good novel.
If you want to be a poet you cannot be concerned with money. Poetry is an art form that pays well in the genre of music lyrics. Some poets like Mary Oliver have a strong following thus make a good living writing poetry. Most poets have a day job.
As an art from poetry is very deep but takes time learn to appreciate given some forms are very foreign to everyday speech and thought. If you want to be a poet of any value you have to dedicate you life to the art. You have to take it seriously. I think each poet, like any artist must find their own way. First of all I think you must learn about poetry, everything you can, its movements, its poets, its forms, its technical aspects and anything relevant. Above all else you should read poems and try to understand them. Be fearless and write.
