STAR WARS, star trek , buck roger's
Blade Runner for sure. Visually powerful and a great story.

The Quiet Earth. Small budget New Zealand film about a man who wakes from a suicide attempt to find he may be the only person left in the world.

Alien. Mood-wise, it is played more as horror than s-f. However, Alien is very definitely s-f of the best kind - humans encountering the strange and unknown as they travel the stars.
Original Star Wars, unless The Ring, and Harry Potter series are classified sci-fi.
2001: A Space Odyssey

Fantastic Voyage

Planet of the Apes
My favourites that I've rewatched a number of times are:
1. BladeRunner ... loved the eyeballs in the beakers!
2. The Matrix .... best wardrobes ever!!
3. The Fifth Element .... gotta love Bruce Willis!!!
Come on, people! Galaxy Quest. What the hell?

Inner Space and...I suppose it has to be Star Wars IV: A New Hope. Han shot first! George Lucas, you my childhood!
My latest story is a racy little piece about what happens when someone cute from work invites you over to watch Netflix and Chill.
1. E.T.

2. Close Encounters of the Third Kind

3. War of the Worlds
Do I have to pick just three....

1) Star Wars
2) The Terminator II
3) The avengers

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

This would have made my list at one time. Kind of slipped my mind, though. It has been a long time since I've seen it.
My top 3

1. Lord of the Rings series
2. X-men series
3. Harry Potter series
Blade Runner, Star Wars and Close Encounters Of The Third Kind
Dark Star. One team of several teams on a mission to destroy stars in the way of something. The weapons are intelligent bombs and one particular bomb and a technician have an argument. Serious fun and thought provoking.

Ghosts of Mars. Mars contains wished for necessities.

Blade Runner.

I-Robot is also good even if loosely based on simply the three laws.

By the way people, fantasy such as LOTR etc is not sci fi, as much as I love the stories and enjoyed the films, the likes of these are not sci-fi.

Where does The Golden Compass fit? It is a fictional, fantastical world where science is discussed or at
Least is a concern of the plot. Merely having something take place on another planet or in space does not necessarily make it sci fi.

Ursula Le Guin's EarthSea trilogy is fantasy. The Left Hand of Darkness is SciFi. Star Trek is sci fi and arguably Star Wars, but it can be called a fantasy if you wish.

The Hobbit, Dragon movies, Phantasm, movies with magic, all these most fit into fantasy. Lord of the rings is Not SciFi. It's in the same group as The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.

If they made the Foundation Trilogy into films, it would be sci fi. Star Wars merely takes place in space, planets, etc. and is really not a very good example of sci fi, it's fun, and enjoyable but it's just a fiction that takes place out in another galaxy far far away. A crappy example of sci fi, it's a terribly average space fantasy.

Harry Potter is as much a SciFi movie as Bridget Jones's Diary. They are not in the slightest. One is a fictional story with realistic setting and happenings ( Bridget Jones meets a man who likes her) and the other has fantastical happenings in fantastical settings ( hidden magical places within the real world setting of Harry Potter).
So as not to sound off anymore about Sci-Fi 'credentials' of movies I will simply apologize for any anguish or hardships I may have caused. I will simply tally everyone's list and create a histogram. The result - the ones with the fewest appearances are sci fi and the rest are popular sci-fi-like-substances-often-mistaken-for-Sci-fi. Somewhat like the viceroy and monarch butterflies. The monarch lives best off milkweed sap and flies south generationally towards méxico and the viceroy is a bit more yellow than the orange hued monarch. The viceroy mimics the pattern of the monarch and is avoided by predators because it resembles the foul-tasting monarch. I put moths in your food to see how much 'moth' is noticeable. What's in the drink I made? Delicious, you say? It's mango caterp.. , ( Leonard immediately does a spit take and glares at Sheldon)
Serenity,
Blade Runner,
Starship Troopers.
my witty cum-back is on its way
Alien
Aliens
Contact
this was harder than i thought.

my initial thought was: i don't watch sci-fi much, but then i was reminded of so many films as i browsed this thread.

there are classics like Robocop, ET, Star Wars, Predator, Alien, and Blade Runner. box office hits like Inception, Jurassic Park, The Matrix, and ID4. cartoon films like Ghost In The Shell and A Scanner Darkly. then there's films like They Live, Cube, Idiocracy, and Donnie Darko.

in the end i decided to list the 3 i find myself able to watch over and over again.

Back To The Future
T2: Judgment Day
Starship Troopers
I would list 2001, The original Star Wars Movies, and the first Alien. First Matrix is great as well, no has mentioned Planet of the Apes the first one was very good with Charlton Heston.
Starship Troopers, Blade Runner, Men in Black - in that order
Lord of the rings, Matrix and Star Trek
Tell me, who was it you left me for? Was it Laszlo, or were there others in between? Or - aren't you the kind that tells?

For me right now
1 The Matrix
2 Serenity
3 Star Trek '09
1. Jurassic Park
2. Armageddon
3. Battlefield Earth
Star wars lol

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Mars Attacks
(In no particular order and likely to change depending on my mood):

Alien
Empire Strikes Back
Blade Runner
Hmmm -- kind of like asking someone which of their kids is the favorite...

Today I'd have to say:

1. Dark City. Wasn't very successful at the box office, but it works on several levels. Great cinematography, an interesting (and not too common) plot, a satisfying ending.
2. Alien. Good casting, good effects, great suspense.
3. 2001. Kubrick's best film IMO (but just slightly ahead of Dr. Strangelove.)
