The Quiet Earth. Small budget New Zealand film about a man who wakes from a suicide attempt to find he may be the only person left in the world.
Alien. Mood-wise, it is played more as horror than s-f. However, Alien is very definitely s-f of the best kind - humans encountering the strange and unknown as they travel the stars.

By the way people, fantasy such as LOTR etc is not sci fi, as much as I love the stories and enjoyed the films, the likes of these are not sci-fi.

The Hobbit, Dragon movies, Phantasm, movies with magic, all these most fit into fantasy. Lord of the rings is Not SciFi. It's in the same group as The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.
If they made the Foundation Trilogy into films, it would be sci fi. Star Wars merely takes place in space, planets, etc. and is really not a very good example of sci fi, it's fun, and enjoyable but it's just a fiction that takes place out in another galaxy far far away. A crappy example of sci fi, it's a terribly average space fantasy.
Learn to discern the difference between schlock and art and you may discover some remarkable things.

Harry Potter is as much a SciFi movie as Bridget Jones's Diary. They are not in the slightest. One is a fictional story with realistic setting and happenings ( Bridget Jones meets a man who likes her) and the other has fantastical happenings in fantastical settings ( hidden magical places within the real world setting of Harry Potter).
So as not to sound off anymore about Sci-Fi 'credentials' of movies I will simply apologize for any anguish or hardships I may have caused. I will simply tally everyone's list and create a histogram. The result - the ones with the fewest appearances are sci fi and the rest are popular sci-fi-like-substances-often-mistaken-for-Sci-fi. Somewhat like the viceroy and monarch butterflies. The monarch lives best off milkweed sap and flies south generationally towards méxico and the viceroy is a bit more yellow than the orange hued monarch. The viceroy mimics the pattern of the monarch and is avoided by predators because it resembles the foul-tasting monarch. I put moths in your food to see how much 'moth' is noticeable. What's in the drink I made? Delicious, you say? It's mango caterp.. , ( Leonard immediately does a spit take and glares at Sheldon)

my initial thought was: i don't watch sci-fi much, but then i was reminded of so many films as i browsed this thread.
there are classics like Robocop, ET, Star Wars, Predator, Alien, and Blade Runner. box office hits like Inception, Jurassic Park, The Matrix, and ID4. cartoon films like Ghost In The Shell and A Scanner Darkly. then there's films like They Live, Cube, Idiocracy, and Donnie Darko.
in the end i decided to list the 3 i find myself able to watch over and over again.

Today I'd have to say:
1. Dark City. Wasn't very successful at the box office, but it works on several levels. Great cinematography, an interesting (and not too common) plot, a satisfying ending.
2. Alien. Good casting, good effects, great suspense.
3. 2001. Kubrick's best film IMO (but just slightly ahead of Dr. Strangelove.)
