Fellow Lushers, today (or yesterday as it technically is) I went for a walk in the park. It was rather lovely. The rain was gently falling, the undergrowth had that wet smell and the trees provided some shelter from the rain (which I really don't mind, in fact, I love the rain). Anyway I came upon my favourite tree and sat on it. It's in a rather attractive "Y" shape and is nice and comfy to sit upon. To some people this will sound weird but here it is: I enjoy hugging trees. They feel comforting when you hug them. Yes, the only thing better than hugging a tree is hugging a human (or perhaps your doggy or other pet). What I was pondering was: does anyone else here enjoy hugging trees? Some of my friends think me mad for hugging trees but that's just because they haven't discovered the magic of it yet, despite me telling them to try it. So, are there any tree huggers around here?

I don't hug trees, but I LOVE them and photograph them and walk amongst them and snog them (it's the only way I can get wood). I used to go walking through woods up a moorland valley on rainy days and then up onto the moors, scaring hikers. They would all be wearing their layers of wet weather gear and boots and stuff, and I'd just be wandering along with my crappy MP3 player in a skirt and hoodie and pair of trainers in the rain and mist like a complete nutter. And then I'd go back into the woods and scare the dog walkers.
Ut incepit fidelis, sic permanet.

I kind of feel like I'm admitting a dirty secret... but I guess, I'm in the right place. smile There IS something wonderful about sitting in a tree, like there are ancient, benevolent arms around you. I have actually thrown an arm around the trunk, but I think the nicest part is just to sit there. Sometimes with a book, sometimes, just to watch the world go by.

You are one of my favourite people on here, GB. Truly, one of a kind. :)
My sister hugs trees, but then she's a druid, so I expect it of her..it's a mutual thing between her and trees.

That sounds like good fun, actually, as long as you don'y do what I do and skip around merrily singing songs and smiling like some insane person (as an amusing aside, there is a mental hospital near my local park and you sometimes see escapees just hanging around but I swear, I'm sane(ish)). I keep forgetting to take my camera out with me on walks but I'll remember the next time because I, too, enjoy taking pictures of trees and I've done my fair share of scaring dog walkers (especially when I'm stoned).

I used to love when I had woodwork in school because of the smell of the wood as you were working on it. The wood seems to guide you, am I right Easy_rider75? T_Elle, it sounds like you've got a great spiritual connection with trees and don't feel like it's a dirty secret, it's beautiful. I also enjoy watching the world go by from a tree and thank you for flattering me WmCutterBlack, seriously, hug a tree if you haven't already, it'll thank you for it. Like I said in my status, trees love hugs.

It's nice to know there are other fellow tree lovers around, insane tree love to y'all!

Yep specially considering now all my work is done strictly with hand tools you don't work the wood it works you. Like you used to do wood working in school to haven't in years though I much prefer this method to power tools these days

I totally agree. I've always favoured hand tools over power tools. It just feels more natural. I was fortunate enough to have a very good woodworking teacher who understood wood very well and was well versed in old, traditional methods. Watching him work was amazing and actually getting to learn some of the traditional woodworking skills was fun. All this talk about woodwoking has just reminded me that I have to make some tuning pegs for my uke, honestly though I'm dreading it because they have to be so damned precise but I'll soldier on and even if it takes me months, I'll do it all by hand because that's the way it should be done. I think the wood is more forgiving of someone who works with hand tools rather than power tools.

Do take pics of it. Lathe work is something I never got to try. Though I have the idea at one point to do a foot powered pole lather

I used to love climbing trees when I was a kid and I had a tree house. Now I have a few live oaks in my yard with spanish moss hanging from them and a couple of palmetto trees.

Old Oaks with the Spanish Moss is so Romantic.

I'll probably wind up just whittling it with a sharp knife and then sanding. I do love a bit of sanding.
You would do well with the "TREE HUGGERS" out there. They don't like to let go.

I have hugged many trees ... due to climbing them. I have slept in trees, had sex in a tree, pee'd behind/next to a tree. Built tree houses .... I LOVE trees. When I first look at a tree ... I look at it, wondering if I could climb it. After I assess it, I do it.

Some of my favorite trees:
Sugar Magnolia (any part of the magnolia family)
Birch
Oak
Walnut
Pecan
Dogwood
Cheery Blossom
Crepe Myrtle
Eucalyptus
Redwoods
Weeping Willow

WAY TOO MANY TO LIST

If I wasn't scared of creepy crawlies I would hug a tree smile.
My granddad has a large farm at the bottom of a totally forested mountain. He has several orchards on his farm. He has peach trees, apple trees, pear trees, cherry trees, pecan trees, walnut trees, and fig trees. It is really awesome to ride his horses around the farm but you have to watch out for the low hanging limbs on the trees. The oak trees in his yard are well over 100 years old and huge. I want a yard full of trees someday.

I really hate that way too many trees get cut down to build big box stores with huge asphalt parking lots by developers and the government building their enormous one story facilities. I am glad that Atlanta has a very strict tree ordinance, which almost always places Atlanta on the list for best tree cities in America.

Looks like a lovely place to live. I used to live next to a wood when I was a kid. The fun I had was just unparalleled.
I live in a heavily wooded area. Logging is one of the biggest industries in my county.

All the trees are laid out and planted in plots. Acres and acres of pine trees racing straight to the sun. Rows and rows of towering pine trees. The ground under covered with a brown fragrant carpet of needles.

Then they are harvested. The ground is stripped clear, plowed.

Watermelons are planted followed by more trees and the cycle continues. It is a peaceful but industrious way of life.

As it stands I am surrounded by sky high trees on 2 sides(third side is overgrown wild trees. a pine and oak mix). I figure in another 2- 3 yrs Ill be surrounded by watermelons. Then small growing seedlings.

Wild trees a few miles from my place
