Using my 3 month free trial of Showtime to catch up on some of their shows. I’ve actually kind of enjoyed The Affair. I was worried that I’d hate it because I think the struggling novelist using beautiful young women as their muse is a bit of a tired trope. However, the first season has such in-depth character development I don’t think that cliche was too distracting. The second season has been a little more plagued by cliche than the first season was. Addd to the struggling writer cliche you have the asshole surgeon, the daughter who wants to become a model instead of going’s to college, the drug addict who wants to open a night club, the now famous writer who has women throwing themselves at him, and a few others I’m sure I’m forgetting. First season A, second season C+.
One interesting thing season two is it has a really accurate portrayal of a therapy session. I hate the way therapy is dramatized in shows and movies. You always have a therapist making sharp inferences, and therapy is such a long long arduous repetive process, you can’t really capture it in a five minute scene. Not the case here. So brovo on that. I’ll probably invest my time in season three regardless of how I feel about season 2.
Side note, big little lies has the best therapy scene I’ve ever scene.
