The great Yogi Berra, Baseball Hall of Famer and one of America's most loved personalities has passed away at age 90. While in the US Navy, Yogi Berra was awarded a Purple Heart for action at the Normandy Invasion. After WWII, he went on to become one of the greatest and most loved professional baseball players, playing his career for the New York Yankees and playing in more World Series than any other player ever. We especially loved him for his down home quotes. He once said, "I never said most of the things I said."

After his playing and managing days in baseball was over he went on to make himself known to younger generation in TV commercials as a very popular product spokesperson and TV commercial personality. And he wrote books about baseball.

Yogi Berra quotes:

"It ain't over till it's over."

"It's deja-vu all over again."

"A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore."

"Even Napoleon had his Watergate."

"You can observe a lot by just watching."

"Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is physical."

"When you come to a fork in the road, take it."

"You wouldn't have won if we'd beaten you."

"Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded."

"I always thought that record would stand until it was broken."

"The future ain't what it used to be."

"Half the lies they tell about me aren't true."

"You should always go to other people's funerals; otherwise, they won't come to yours."

"If the world was perfect, it wouldn't be."

"It gets late early out there."

"The other teams could make trouble for us if they win."

"Pair up in threes."

"There are some people who, if they don't already know, you can't tell 'em."

"I wish I had an answer to that because I'm tired of answering that question."

Thanks Yogi!
Not a baseball fan but was always a fan of Yogi Berra. Sorry to hear of his passing but he will continue to live on in peoples hearts and memories.

Never heard of him but he had a nice life living to 90. Tell me more about the 'World Series' and how many countries take part?

BUZ, I grew up a Red Sox fan when Yogi Berra played. Casey Stengel used to say that Yogi was the man he built his teams around. That is a major statement considering who he managed.
I honestly have never seen a man who influenced the outcome of a game more than Yogi, including, the great David Ortiz, the matchless Roberto Clemente, Teddy ballgame. He was at the core of the greatest team that perhaps ever played the game, the New York Yankees under Casey.
You just had so see as many of his games as I did with him in it to know all the little things he did that turned losses into victories. Yes, I was a Red Sox fan, so I did not like the Yankees, yet we always loved and respected Yogi Berra.
Yogi showed us how to do it in everything he did. He was a great man and I shall miss him dearly.
Oh, my, Time for Self Disclosure - I am a New York Yankees fan, have been since age 6, 1961, the year of Mantle and Maris, 61 homeruns, World Series and Yogi Berra as manager. It was a great time for a kid like me. But great things in our temporal lives don't last forever. Over the next few years, the Yankees got old - in 1964 with Berra still the manager, the Yankees did win the American League pennant by coming in first in a 10 team league (no divisions in those days), but lost the World Series to the Stl Louis Cardinals. Yankee management placed the blame for the World Series defeat on manager Berra and fired him. Management then proceeded to hire away the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, Johnny Keane, to be the next manager of the Yankees. That arrangement didn't last long. The Yankees were an old team. In 1965 they finished in 6th place. In 1966 they finished last, and this poor pre-adolescent boy was crushed. But that boy did learn the meaning of being a true fan - you stay with your team in the tough times. And I still love Yogi Berra and his mangled use of phrases of the English language. The boy became man and loved the reunion between Berra and the Yankees not that many years ago. He has been one of my "heroes", because he was a great Yankee, true, but also because he had that delightfully warped sense of humor. So, "if you come to a fork in the road, take it." - Yogi Berra

I am really looking forward to an answer to this question.
We talked a bit about him in my class since we're doing a "sports" themed story. The author was still alive at the time of publication and would be in his late 80's so with Yogi Berra living to 90, we talked about how it's still possible that the author is retired, but still alive, today.

What impressed me was how many of my kids knew who Yogi Berra was and were even a bit familiar with his record.

RIP Yogi.

Must be a hard one to answer Jack. Is baseball played in the Czech Republic?

I don't know much about baseball... but I think the 'World Series is an abbreviation of a previous name.. if someone can enlighten us? .. then it becomes clear.. the name and why only teams from the USA play .... well it did to me .. giggles

I heard that this gentleman was the inspiration for Yogi Bear? Is this correct?

Thank you Hayley. I thought it only consisted of US teams (wasn't 100% sure though) so I'm a bit confused why it is the WORLD series.

They have teams of girls that play something similar called Softball (again I'm baffled by the terminology as the ball is anything but soft) and also in the U.K there is a game usually played by girls called rounders that is similar to baseball maybe they should be allowed in the World Series.

Here in Australia we play both baseball and softball. I know of at least one woman that played baseball here and she could hit the ball as hard as any guy. Guys play softball here as well as women, I used to play in my younger days. After being hit a few times by softballs I used to think it was a strange name for the sport for like you said the ball is not soft, I had the bruisers as proof. It is a great game to play and watch.
