Interesting post, chef, and very true!
I disagree with the ADHD one, though. Some behaviour definitely comes down to parenting, but our kids are also being bombarded with food additives that weren't around in 1959. They often have an adverse affect on behaviour.
I agree Lisa. Sometimes it does have that effect. Other times it's just them being kids and being allowed to run! Everyone wants to keep such a tight rein on kids when they should just be allowed to run off the energy that they have. That is if the parents would kick their asses off the couch and the x-box.
I remember my brother broke his arm in school, and the teacher on playground duty figured it out in about a second but of course he was all of 9 and freaking out so she just held him in her arms and whispered soothing things to him until they could get my mom to come get him. When she handed him off to my mom she she gave him a big kiss on the cheek and told him he'd be OK. Now, she'd be imprisoned for caring for an injured child. This PC stuff is insane.
I know it's fashionable to blame food additives for ADHD and so on, but my own theory is that parents who did way too many drugs has a part in it. Every child I've ever dealt with with any of those disorders, their parents have admitted to drug use earlier in their lives. Odd how rock stars with heavy drug habits also have messed up kids as do many athletes who abused steroids. I'm not telling anyone what to do with their lives, but some things do have consequences.

When I was a child,, When dad said no,,, IT meant NO!,,,, not Well we could negotiate
Speaking as a parent of three boys with ADHD, two of whom are autistic, I can say without a doubt that in my case... DRUG USE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!
My mother was a drug addict and I have never and will never use drugs! The only exception being the drugs which had been prescribed, none of which were taken either during pregnancy nor during nursing.
It is my personal belief that my two autistic sons are the victims of the combination vaccinations which are so prevalent now. They were part of the study to test these and the possible consequences were not explained to me. As far as my eldest, who knows...
But it is a sad comment to this world today that those differences are so vast only 50 years removed.

Eh, I was born in 1960.
Some things were necessary and some things were not.
My parents did not receive their copy of the Magical Parenting book.
But, the old days were not as good as today's days.
Hindsight is 20/20 - about as true a statement as any.
The same GQP demanding we move on from January 6th, 2021 is still doing audits of the November 3rd, 2020 election.
Scenario of my life: 10 year old is caught spray painting an abandoned, run-down house.
1959: kid gets his ass whipped by dad and is made to clean up the paint.
2009: 10 year old gets to ride in the back of police car, taken to the police station, and gets and intimate tour of the jail. He is then booked and charged with 1 misdemeanor and 1 felony. Convicted and ordered to be on supervised probation for 9 months, 12 hours of community service, and a fine of $1000.
Seriously, where in the hell do they expect a 10 year old to come up with that kind of cash?
They think if they hurt the parents in the purse that they will keep a closer eye on the kid. Teach him not to do shit like that.
