Not sure if this was supposed to occur today or later this evening. Exact time not given.

Large solar prominence occurs on April 13, 2010.

"The eruption hurled a bright coronal mass ejection (CME, movie) into space. The expanding cloud could deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field around April 15th. NOAA forecasters estimate a 35% chance of polar geomagnetic activity when the CME arrives."

Had to look it up to understand the implications, and this is my favorite comment:

Apparently it can cause blackouts, disrupt communications satellites and GPS systems and screw up water distribution pipelines. It also causes homing pigeons to lose their way, as well as affecting migrating whales and dolphins. Finally, your dental fillings will come flying out of your teeth.
OK, not sure about that last one...
Is this what they were talking about on CNN today? A big fireball looking thing seen in the midwest?

That was a meteor...Meteor over the midwest...
Algol
That was a meteor and I tried to get a vid to show everybody.

A CME is a coronal mass ejection, which is when the sun sends out hot plasma, full of ions that really screw up communications on Earth. You can't see it with the naked eye.
Did you get pics Rocc? It was supposed to go on for two nights.
I don't have any vids for an aurora from it, but I found the vid and story about the meteor.

Are you talking about the minor meteor shower? I never have any luck with those things.

Awe-some!

(CNN) -- Authorities in several Midwestern states were flooded Wednesday night with reports of a gigantic fireball lighting up the sky, the National Weather Service said.

The fireball was visible for about 15 minutes beginning about 10 p.m., said the National Weather Service in Sullivan, Wisconsin, just west of Milwaukee.

"The fireball was seen over the northern sky, moving from west to east," said the NWS in the Quad Cities area, which includes parts of Iowa and Illinois.

"Well before it reached the horizon, it broke up into smaller pieces and was lost from sight," the service said. "Several reports of a prolonged sonic boom were received from areas north of Highway 20, along with shaking of homes, trees and various other objects including wind chimes," it said.

It said the fireball was seen across parts of Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. CNN affiliate WISN-TV said that people in Ohio also saw it.
The fireball was the one I was talking about. I saw some vid on CNN. Very cool.
You won't see the gamma radiation from the coronal mass ejection, but you 'might' see it's effects in the form of increased aurora borealis display.

Thank goodness for our healthy magnetosphere.
