Okay, so everyone knows that I was crazy enough to click the horrible link of death a while back. Since then I have been running spybot and AVG to try to remedy the problem. My computer has not been the same since then. Now, every time I try to go online my computer shuts itself off and restarts. It is a real hassle, which is why I have not been around much lately. I get one comment in before it shuts itself off. I have heard that if I restore my computer to the way it was when I got it, all will be much better. So what I am asking is, How do I do that? I have only been able to figure out how to restore it to an earlier date, which only helps for a short time...Like a day, then we are back to square one. I am tired of fighting with it and I fight the urge to take it out into the yard and drop kick it every day. I just have to make it to tax time, when I plan to get myself a shiny new laptop.....Can someone please help me out?

Log on to Windows as Administrator.
2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.
3. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.
4. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system checkpoint in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next. A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.
5. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.
6. Log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Restoration Complete page appears.
7. Click OK.
and if that doesn't work for you take it to best buy with 50 bucks and tell them you want to know what's wrong with it and how to fix it
I have done that several times and it only works for about a day, sometimes only a few hours.

I don't have fifty bucks to shell out right now...Maybe I should just drop kick it. It will at least make me feel better, right? LOL
lol yeah it would. try DB's idea. my fingers are crossed for you.
How old is it and does it need a cleaning - dust. Vacumm it, use a Q-tip to clean the fan. I just did it an mine seems to run btter. It's almost 3 yrs old and would shut down and not reboot. If you do vacumm it - use the brush with a lite touch.

Good luck

You need to restore it to a date BEFORE the date the virus appeared. Go back further in time. Sometimes the virus gets restored because you didn't turn off System Restore before scanning and wiping it out. The virus is still active.
If that doesn't work, I'd try what Symantec recommends:

1. Disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP).
2. Update the virus definitions. (Real important.)
3. Run a full system scan.
4. Delete any values added to the registry.

For specific details on each of these steps, read the following instructions.

1. To disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP)
If you are running Windows Me or Windows XP, we recommend that you temporarily turn off System Restore. Windows Me/XP uses this feature, which is enabled by default, to restore the files on your computer in case they become damaged. If a virus, worm, or Trojan infects a computer, System Restore may back up the virus, worm, or Trojan on the computer.

Windows prevents outside programs, including antivirus programs, from modifying System Restore. Therefore, antivirus programs or tools cannot remove threats in the System Restore folder. As a result, System Restore has the potential of restoring an infected file on your computer, even after you have cleaned the infected files from all the other locations.

Also, a virus scan may detect a threat in the System Restore folder even though you have removed the threat.

For instructions on how to turn off System Restore, read your Windows documentation, or one of the following articles:

* How to disable or enable Windows Me System Restore
* How to turn off or turn on Windows XP System Restore
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

Note: When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed, reenable System Restore by following the instructions in the aforementioned documents.

For additional information, and an alternative to disabling Windows Me System Restore, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article: Antivirus Tools Cannot Clean Infected Files in the _Restore Folder (Article ID: Q263455).

Do you know what the virus name is, Birdie?
Is it a Desktop or a Laptop...
I don't know the name of the virus, but Lush probably does.
I have a desk top, Dell, with Windows XP. It was a used, rebuilt job when I got it but seemed to be in excellent shape. I have had it almost two years. I have tried the system restore to an earlier time but it only goes back a few weeks. I tried to set it back to before I got the virus but it doesn't want to go back that far. Being computer stupid, as I am, I am almost at a loss. But I will keep trying. Thanks for all the info.

What is Trojan? Spybot keeps getting rid of it, only to have it show up again the next day...
A trojan is a virus that got launched after a seemingly-harmless program was installed. Get the name of it, ok? I'll look into it. You're not computer stupid, either. You know a lot more about computers than most people, after all the troubleshooting.
Do you still have any warranty left on it ...

How long does it actually stay on for ?

When it shut down does it seem that the power was switched off

when its running can you hear the fan going..

Its far more likely to be a hardware that a software problem
Okay Rocco...I turned off system restore and I am running spybot and antivirus...I will let you know what happens after that.

And D...It didn't come with a warranty
Sometimes it works for 30 minutes, sometimes less...I have gotten it to work for an hour but not usually more than that. When it shuts down it is like power failure. It just restarts on it's own. No, I don't hear a fan.
But in the time that I actually do get it running, explorer, firefox, and safari all crash after about 10 minutes or so and I have to start all over again. So I am guessing that it isn't a hardware problem...But who knows...
And I wonder how do I find out the name of the virus? It didn't exactly introduce itself...It was more like a billion boxes all popping up at once that, in a nutshell, said SCREW YOU!! LOL

LUSH!?!?!? Do you know the name of it?

So, my spybot is almost finished and I am wondering what I should do next...
It sounds like you clean it up but never remove the registry keys, so the problem self generates the next time you boot it up
If you can identify the virus I can tell you how to remove it Unfortunately system restore is not a heavy duty program I use Go back which will remove a virus
I also use AVG What you have to do is list what virus AVg comes up with Then search the registry and remove all references to that virus.

Another way is to gather up all your installation disk and format the drive and then restore it to when you first purchased the computer. You will loose all documents emails everything
I can't tell you or stress enough the value of a backup, having a removable drive to store and restore all previous date.

might I also add a piece of advice there is a reason I use a mac I do not run system hogging virus software I never use Explorer or outlook email.
I use fire fox a stand alone program and thunderbird stand alone e mail programs It adds a layer of protection and is not inter twined into the operating system like explorer leaving back doors open for virus attacks . Using Mac osx operating system, No windows virus can infect it You might say everbody else uses MS office word and excel MS office for Mac is completely compatible with a Windows computer. I a can work on a word document in a mac save it on a Cd and continue working on it on a windows computer

on a nut shell you virus software is removing part of the virus each time you run it however it is not removing the registry keys that self replicate the virus each time you boot up
those keys have to be removed using reg edit. You also have to turn off any fire walls to run your virus extracting software
If you can identify the virus or spy ware you can pm me and I will try to walk you threw the extraction may be give you a phone number to talk to my guy he is a lot better than me to give you instruction

Then I think its a faulty power supply or a fan or hot sink fault
spybot I expect is just removing cookies..
DB might be right, if it just restarts and doesn't show any messages. It might be overheating.

I had a laptop doing the same last week ...
was OK for me ..but the owner had it shut down on her every night
but was ok during the day.

Its Ok now .. any body wanna guess the problem ..
Okay, so this is what I did last night. First, I made myself a nice drink. Then I sat in front of my computer and tried to stare it down...It didn't look convinced. So, as Rocco said, I turned off the system restore. I ran spybot and AVG. While that was going on, I got kinda bored and so I opened up the control panel. This is the equivalent of placing an easily excited blond in a space ship (that's me!) and leaving her to sit there and ask, What does this button do? I began to uninstall all kinds of programs that I didn't think were necessary to me or my computer. I enlisted the help of my brother who, through messenger, told me what each and every program was and if I could live without it. With his help, I stumbled upon two more buttons: One said something about clean up. The other was a defrag button. I did the clean up and then when I clicked on the defrag button he told me that I can't use the computer until it is done with the defragging. I sat and watched it for a few minutes...1%.....2%....That was taking to long and was about as exciting as watching paint dry so I left it and went to bed. It's kind of like throwing a roast in the crock pot, you just have to trust it to be awesome when you come back. When I woke up this morning it looked normal...I turned the system restore back on and my automatic updates, as well. Now I am playing online to see if I get kicked off...So far, nothing bad has happened and this thing is running so fast I think I will rename it Zippy. LOL Cross your fingers and thank you, EVERYONE, for all of your advice!!
