I watched a French movie called 'Serephina' it's based on a true story about a reclusive artist. I loved it even though the whole movie was French with English subtitles.

My question is appart from the obvious French film I can think of; what other French films from years ago can you think of that I might like to watch. I don't care if it's unavailable on dvd etc I enjoy googling the movie and finding out more about it.

There's a French movie called The Bridesmaid that I enjoyed. At first I didn't get it, but I watched it again and was able to follow the plot of the story very carefully.

le chevre, early depardieu movie which started me on french films

He Loves Me... He Loves Me Not, has audrey tatou from amelie, but very different flick, I won't get into spoilers

Angel-A, directed by Luc Besson, he usually has his girlfriends as the lead female role

Cyrano de Bergerac - also with Depardieu

Foreign films in general to me are more enjoyable than US productions, my favs....Anything by Takashi Miike, Wings of Desire (beautiful, and in black and white until the end), Unbearable lightness of being (early daniel day lewis), and la belle epoque (spanish film). Enjoy

Good to see someone with good cinematic taste on lush.
Btw, Miike is highly influenced by Kinji Fukasaku concerning the yakuza movies. Fukasaku made some very raw in your face yakuza movies with a good amount of violence. I still regret not renting the entire "Yakuza papers" DVD set when I still lived in the US and had Netflix.
I guess Fukasaku's most known movie is "Battle Royale". Sadly he passed away 7 years ago.
Another great Asian director is Johnnie To who's still rather prolific.

French movies are so numerous, where to begin?
I guess one should also mention the "Trois couleurs" trilogy and "La double vie de Véronique" by Kieslowski.
"Belle du jour" is indeed a great classic too and was part of a big French cinema wave in those days. "Le samouraï" by Melville is another perfect example of what French cinema was all about back then.
Pretty much anything by Woody Allen has been influenced by the French. And obviously everything by Bergman has greatly influenced Allen.
A relatively recent French classic is "La haine", its topic is still very current and probably always will. Some more excellent recent French arthouse movies: "Irréversible", "C'est arrivé près de chez vous", "Il y a longtemps que je t'aime" and Haneke's French movies "Code inconnu: Récit incomplet de divers voyages", "La pianiste" and "Caché".

I could go on and on but I think you get the point hehe. The cinematic world is extremely varied and French cinema has played and still plays an important part.
