That's sort of how Canada had our only female Prime Minister, Kim Campbell, too. She got hammered in the next election though. Her Progressive Conservative party lost so spectacularly that they never really recovered, and had to join forces with the Reform party to bevome relevant again. Hopefully Julia Gillard does better than that.
