I remember reading that he wanted to report the honest news about the Vietnam War, but the network wouldn't let him.
When my bf told me he had died, my reaction was the same as a number of people here...
I thought he was reading old news.

I remember my dad telling me that he watched Walter's final newscast, even though he liked NBC more. He said it was because of Cronkite's professionalism that he felt he needed to watch so as to, in a way, pay tribute to a great journalist.
I can understand that. After all the ratings queens on the news now, professionals are hard to come by.
