Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice has topped a list of teachers' favourite books, compiled by the Times Educational Supplement (TES).
An online survey asked 500 teachers to name their favourite titles.
Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird was second and the Harry Potter series third - but the top 100 also included picture books like The Gruffalo.
The list "is a masterpiece of erudition and entertainment", according to TES editor Gerard Kelly.

Outside of the classics and classic authors I have a couple recommendations. Two books by Wally Lamb. "I Know This Much To Be True" and "The Hour I First Believed". Both are excellent, but of the two "The Hour..." is better. But be forewarned. It is emotionally brutal and will stick with you for a couple days after you're done reading it.

Anything by Steven King. His books are far better than the majority of his movies. Out of his works, The Stand, Salem's Lot, The Dark Tower series, It, The Dark Half, and Needful Things are all great.

Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer - a little bit for younger readers, but since many adults enjoy harry potter, it shouldn't be a problem.

I know it's on that top 20 list but Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials series have been my favourite books since I first read them. I have other favourites that come and go but those books have always stayed with me.
