Since you all were so helpful to Birdie, how about sending that help my way? I have Norton (yes, I know its horrible, Ive heard all about it) and ran my weekly scan last night. It found 3 trojans but it said it could not delete them. So how do I get these friggin things off my computer??

Get Spybot, Pixie! That is how I got rid of Trojan. Just like Rocco said. Except it worked better once I turned off system restore and then ran spybot. http://www.spybots.org.cn/
But I have norton! Its suppost to get rid of all this stuff! My computer is also being retarded in the aspect that it will sometimes (alot lately) say that the page cannot be displayed. I have contacted my ISP about this and they have assured me that it is not my internet connection, but infact something that norton is doing. I have had norton for 3 years now and never have had a problem....til now.....

Things that can't be displayed is regulated by security settings in either internet explorer or Norton

Usually you have an option to turn of the security or lower the current settings in internet explorer

Honestly years ago I stopped using internet explorer for the same reason as many people experience.
There are know 120k security holes in internet explorer that allows back door viruses into you operating system

My theory is to run a stand alone internet browser and email program. None have that backdoor access that internet explorer and outlook provide.

It is a simple layer of security. I find that Mozilla Fire fox runs and loads pages quicker. It also does a good job preventing pop ups

During the installation, Free btw Mozilla.org, It will ask you to import your current book marks. It does it automatically for you

Please post the Trojans you find so that I can tell you how to permanently extract them. It will require deleting some registry keys

Second part ,while at Mozilla ( firefox), Down load and use their email Program instead of outlook ( thunderbird)

A penny for thought

If I were to write a virus to do the most damage and get the most recognition, I would write to stealth the two most popular anti virus programs

( Norton and macafee) I would not bother writing to stealth for some little used anti virus program Like AVG. It takes too much time.

What I'm saying Having Norton may not be advantageous. The reason There are so many viruses, is once that loop hole is found it is exploited

As soon as Norton writes a new update, the virus writer just edits an adds simple derivations to what he previously wrote, again to stealth Norton and on and on it goes.

If I weren't a dumb blonde, I could write the next Virus. It is so easy with all the computer hacker forums and sites
Hi try downloading AVG Free it gets rid of anything
I'm not that computer-literate, but I did have a co-worker who was the company computer tech. Norton is famous for not being able to deal with the onslaught of gleeful virus-spreaders and hacking afficianados. McAfee is better, but you have to keep it updated, too. These programs the others have suggested are great, but you can run into problems when they collide. And they will collide, in a polite way, because these downloads want to check out ALL your files, including your other antivirus programs.

If Norton is continually wanting to reboot, or have you reboot the system, it is already compromised. I know it from experience. The best you can do is uninstall it, and buy another one (McAfee), to replace it.

I use Ad-Aware as an extra trojan hunter. You can download a free yet effective version.

Oddly enough, Trojan is such a wonderful name for many of us...pity, it had to be used as a term for something so invasive. That Trojan Horse ploy really ruined it for many of us.
Pam you are no dumb blonde....your advice is right on the money. Hackers do indeed create viruses that find loopholes in big name antivirus software. No one bothers with the off brand ones because no one has that kind of time on their hands.

Kiss Me In The Rain - a microfiction about love and desire

Ok you all are confusing me! Just tell me how to get "the page cannot be displayed" to stop!

Well, that's somethiing completely different. The fact that you can get on the Internet means you have connecitivity, but when a page will not display, sometimes it's the website you are trying to get to (meaning, they are having problems themselves), or your settings prevent you from accessing that page.
I'll back off now and let someone else take over. I do understand your frustration. It can get to be very irritating, and sometimes a flurry of advice can make it worth.

Why, I remember the time I went golfing with a bunch of guys, and my friend wanted to help me with every little thing. I was so...(blah, blah, blah)
See, its this site that says it sometimes too! What settings do I have to adjust?

You may want to check your Norton, by clicking on the icon on the bottom bar, and look into the settings. Sometimes it blocks third-party cookies, which does not enable you to view the pages. Otherwise, at the top of your page, click on the Tools, go to internet settings, and go through those. There are controls in there that determine what you can look at, where you can go, and it may have changed because of Norton or because of a virus that slipped in.
I still need to pass this baton off to someone more experienced than I. Anyone? Take-the-baton...?
Pixie when was the last time You flushed out you cache, files previous history, in general cleaned you computer up a bit.

You know even a car needs a tune up and oil change every once in a while

What I getting at, am I guessing here, its been awhile without preventive cleaning up.

That would be your starting point cleaning up your internet explorer I have to power up my lab top my only windows computer and actually load internet explorer and find definite instruction for you. I'm working on a Mac and don't need virus protection

then again you could just download and install firefox.

Ok go to start lower left click it on
Click on all programs
Click on accessories Scroll down
to system tools Click on system tools
Click on disk clean
After it searches you computer and it could take a while another dialogue box will appear

In that box for now click to place a check mark in the boxes before these files

check temporary internet files

check recycle bin

check Temporary files

Now open Inter net explorer

select tools Scroll down to
internet options Another page will load

select delete cookies and clear history

really all theses things should be done once a week

preventing you from opening pages are the privacy and security boxes on the top of this page

Clean up you computer first then I can take you into privacy and security settings and advanced options

Oh I may be blonde, but last night I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express

Good one - I like it - Micky Likes it.

" Disk Cleanup" is a good idea to run once a week and once a month run Defrag. program.

Personally, I run "Trends Micro Internet Secruity" as my anti - everything. Works for me as Norton let to much through, McAfree as well.

Bat
Ok, so I have ran a disk clean up and went to do a disk defrag. I got this message: Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volumesadcsmile. Please run Chkdsk/f.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN????

Evidently disk of volume F has problems, sector out of line,or missing data errors. I will not take credit for my knowledge so click on this link for a better descritpion I would go to start run and type

chkdsk:c and let it run. It may take some time to scan and repair your c volume

Then chkdsk: f and see what that does

You may have a hidden restore volume created by the computer manufacturer, For the ability of restoring you computer back to factory settings in Drive F

Ok these are the things that my antivirus cannot remove:

trojan.byteverify

infostealer.gampass

trojan.wimad

Any idea how to get rid of these?
♥ Listen, touch, and look around in the air and on the ground. If you watch all nature's things, you might just see a fairy's wings. ♥
Info on each:

byteverify: http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2003-090514-4048-99&tabid=3

gampass: http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2006-111201-3853-99&tabid=3

wimad: http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2005-011213-2709-99&tabid=3

You don't use Symantec, but this is some valuable info about getting rid of them.

DB, I use CCleaner, too, and love it. It wouldn't help Pixie's situation, though, in my opinion.

Chkdsk with the F option simply means to Fix any errors it finds when it scans the hard drive for errors. It has nothing to do with any other disks.
The utility program i like is System Mechanic

I removes unwanted unnecessary registry entries

cleans up unnecessary files and a lot more like cleaning up you start up programs

Honestly it is much more industrial strength than ccleaner

It is ..but it costs
Yes it is a is a commercial program not free. At some point it cost to have a superior program. It performs better
It does a better job cleaning up unwanted files and entries.. I have run it and found over 500 illegal or incomplete registry entries
on some of the senior citizen computers we help with.

If viruses or Trojan keep showing up after the software program indentify's them and has tried to extract them, Then there are lines in the registry missed.

These registry entries stealth the virus detection removal process and are there for self re-generation

One must manually delete them. In the run box type regedit ,Then use the find feature and type in the virus description word/ s Find will scan the registry and highlight the offending entry.

Delete that key and hit find next button, till registry search is completed. You have to do that for each Trojan.

A word to the wise before doing so, I would backup the registry. One wrong key stroke and you can render your program or operating system from loading.

Another program I happen to like is Go Back, a much better program for restoring prior settings. Far superior to systems restore. What it does is take snapshots of your harddrive when every change is made. That includes changes in the registry as well. Another nice feature is, the ability to find a word document you made changes to, but now want to go back to the original. You don't want the edited version.

My recomendations are:
Stop using Internet explorer use Firefox. It's internet explorer security holes, that are being exploited

Get a commercial tune up program like System Mechanic, now being offered on the net 50% off

Go Back is a program that has saved a lot of anguish, the ability to restore is so much better than system restore. It backs up the registry. You can even set a manual restore point, before any new program installation or doing regedit

I can't tell you the importance of backing up enough. If you value you data, then back it up

I use a portable USB hard drive just for that purpose.

I sent you a pm offering any additional help you may need
