this just pisses me off.

I don't care if you're famous or not, rich or not, that's fucked up.

Being a food server before...SMH.. no words.

If you aren't happy with the service or food-ask for the manager.

He should be prepared to eat at home from now on. Smh.
If he's smart he won't eat out again or it might have a topping not on the menu.

I thought a tip was a reward for good service? Isn't leaving a $.20 tip a statement that something was wrong?

Why do I want to spend more time in the place than I have to? If the service is bad, I do not want to be there any longer.

If the food is bad, that is not the servers problem, and the server should not be penalized, but I have heard to many stories of "alterations" done to food, so I do not want to talk to any one at the place.
Good service is 15%. Growing up, that used to be 10% but that is a different issue. Better service is higher than 15%. So if it is bad service, you are rewarding that bad service with a 15%. As for being an insult, call it what you will, but bad service should not be rewarded.

Please explain why you should reward bad service with a 15% tip? If a person gets 15% no matter how bad they do, then what incentive is there to get better service? If a person is giving bad service, then self pride is not a motivation.

I agree, I will always tip good service,,,, poor service, I will tell them and I wont tip because it hasn't been earned. I also hit the roof when a tip is assumed, happens a lot in Canada when the waiter(ress) just takes the tip from the change and that really pisses me off.

I'm just an agree little man

Someone needs to teach good manners. As a former food worker, it is 20% normally or you are a jerk. 15% if the waitron is off (not the kitchen) and 25% if they are outstanding or gorgeous. Beyond that it is a discussion with the manager!
As others have mentioned, maybe he wasn't happy with the service. I would like to hear his reasons first before making a judgement.

It is though a bad idea adding tips to the overall bill. I always pay the bill and leave a tip personally for the waiter/waitress. There is usually a good mark-up on food to give the restaurant owner a good return and chefs are well paid anyway. It's the waiting staff that are on minimum wage and deserve the tip.

A twenty-cent tip isn't a "statement", it's an insult. If I am out, and the service is particularly bad for no obvious reason (obvious lack of staff, really busy night, whatever), then I might leave only a 15% tip. Otherwise, I tip 20-30%. Always.

This. I've worked for tips. I never tip less than 15%.
I've read some very interesting pieces on tipping culture in the past - some of the more vociferous voices against it even think of it as a throwback to the days of slavery. I'm not sure I'd agree with it but by way of coincidence if nothing else, tipping culture in the US starts around the same time that slavery is abolished.

Before people start throwing their arms up saying "When I was a bar worker, I needed tips to live" it's worth reading what one of these anti-tippers believes - that tipping promotes inequalities in society rather than eliminating them.
