Yeah, he was amazing. Began his stage career at the Stratford Shakespearean festival about 40 minutes from where I am sitting and returned there periodically. There aren't too many actors from that generation who moved as easily between stage, cinema, and TV as he did. And made a helluva good Klingon, too.
I only saw him on stage once, when he played Iago in 1982. James Earl Jones was opposite him as Othello.
Apparently he was not that fond of The Sound of Music, calling it The Sound of Mucus.. That was the first time I was aware of him, in 1965. But he has a true professional, and he turned in a fine performance despite whatever misgivings he may have had about it.

A wonderful actor, a proper old fashioned gentleman and by all accounts a delight to work with. The world is poorer for his passing.
