The Skald learns to paint

Well I bought a copy of Paint Shop Pro 2020 recently on Humble Bundle and figured I learn how to use the thing.
So I found a board with image editors who create avatars, I haven't had a class yet, but I'm hoping to learn something.

I got a scared of the challenge when I saw the sheer caliber of work some of them walk around in, when my pilot test had 3 layers and some have 25 + layers I went and sucked my thumb for a while.
I had a lovely fist fight with the installer and had to pummel into obedience, but I managed it.

So I logged into the training school and someone left the Level 1 master assignments up.
When you feel Fear and you're properly Angry with the bloody tool you have to use, you don't stop to think if the challenge is too great.
So I bunched up my fists, screamed my war cry and jumped off the cliff.

For the technical I had to merge 2 images ( I can't share them here), use the lighting tool to brighten it up, add a figure from their library (again I can't share the original). Put a text message on it, bevel the text and add a shadow.
I added 2 text elements, shadows, beveling and used a metallic font.

So ladies and gents, this is the Skald's first Technical Challenge submission.
Not bad for 2 hours work and a brief trot through the Corel Academy to see what the buttons did.

Looks like I misread the challenge 3 rules. Had to redo the whole thing.

I mean I'm not exactly pumping the air over it, but it's a heck of a lot better then a lot of the image retouches I've done. Still that's 3 technical challenges done , well 4 since I had to redo Challenge 3.
I think I can put my brushes down for the day and get back to writing.
Here little muse.

After the Yule break time to get back to paint class. Oh golly.
It really didn't go well. What was it like, here's my journal entry for it.

So far training is like going for driving lessons.
You've had a parent take you for a drive round the block, you know where the key goes, how to start the engine, and how to set your mirrors properly before you start.
Great, so now to learn how to actually do more then drive in a straight line.
Only you don't really get the chance to learn how to do that.
I've spent more time learning how to be a mechanic then I've spent learning how to actually drive.
I know others are out there learning how to drive in the dark, how to do a three point turn and how to switch on their fog lights.
While I'm learning how to spot a brake fluid leak and fix it with my undies and some duck tape.
I still don't know how to drive any better then when I started but I'm fast becoming a kick ass mechanic.

Specific point. Level 1 Stage 4 masks. Go find tubes, frames, brushes, masks, etc.
I've vaguely heard these are things you can use to mess about with how an image appears, so off to look into them.
An hour of google digging makes me want to leave the laptop to grab a cup of tea and scream at the starlings.
Turns out you can find all sorts of stuff for all of them, but most of them are either
A)For a way obsolete version of the tool that isn't supported
B) REquires a third party tool that's long dead and isn't supported by your OS
C) The link is broken.

So an hour of digging has me pulling my hair out, boiling with frustration and absolutely nothing to show for it.
Not a single damned thing, I can use.
So I slink off to the main forum in the deflated desperate hope somebody has left something up there.
They have, so I grab the mask pack and a few texture packs.
Don't ask me what in the flying fuck they actually do, I'm hoping that will come to me later when I'm less wound up.
Great, they download, and unzip.
Instructions say go add them to the file location path so the tool will auto scan them and pop them in.
Great, so masks go in the masks section, and textures in the textures section.
Whir whir cling. All files extracted, paths added, we are good to go.
Restart the app and stand by.
Ping. Error Duplicate file names in file location path.
OK. Nope can't exit it, can't bypass it, can't close the app either.
Reboot time.
Turns out there are duplicate names in the files, now how do I solve that.
Off to Corel I go, spending a lovely 30 minutes waiting for support to answer me before getting a brainwave.
I force deleted the entire block of files I'd added to the tool and force restarted the laptop.
Ping. Open the app, no error messages, everything runs perfectly normally.

So that's 2 hours of work up in smoke, my good mood a smoldering ruin, I'm getting a stress headache and I want to burst into tears.

That's PSP training!

Well, considering that I have exactly zero artistic talent, I say: Congratulations on learning!

This is something you chose to do, and you should be applauded for doing so.

Also, please be kind to yourself.

I had a little cry with my instructor who essentially admitted that whole chunks of this won't work because we're using newer software.
THAT was when I lost my shit entirely.
Dont fucking teach a module on something you can't get to fucking work properly, students need to make progress not to do heavy software deployment engineering.
Doing 20 hours research in enterprise deployment tools instead of learning to paint isn't fucking cool!!!
Fuck this shit. I'm off to my notebook for a scribble session at least my pencil doesn't suddenly decide it only works with vellum 1.2 or something.
