I think its safer for some people who aren't confident functioning in the real world, and aren't happy with themselves, to fixate on something unattainable that they probably rationally know they will never have. The imagination can create a whole different world in their heads.
Obsession can lead to stalking (very bad) and emotional manipulations.
As an underlying psychological diagnosis, I think maybe Borderline Personality Disorder?
Always important to maintain a connection to reality... this helps one avoid obsessions. But you can't rationalize with an obsessed person (they need professional counselling).
If this is happening to you... run... don't walk.

I'm not going to deny it, at some point I have been obsessed with someone one way or the other. But before I did, im most certain that i have known this person a bit long enough that it was hard for me not to see her or just talk to her even for a day.. For me i can be obsessed with someone's attitude or basically just by the way how he/she acts in front of me. It's all on how that person moves around me that makes me want him/her everyday... Hope i make sense though...

Immaturity contributes to it. The actual cause? I haven't a clue, although in my youth I did obsess a few times, of that I cannot lie. My hypothesis?
Wanting someone who did not want anything to do, with me.
