The Hunger... absolutely superb transformation scene with David Bowie.

Although that wasn't what made it intense. It's quite the erotic movie in parts and I was just a teenager watching it in company but it was the seriously hot blonde french girl who was also there who added the certain frisson I felt. Not one of my stories so no "climax" to speak of but all the same!
Having said that i did get to see her boobies later but that's another tale!!!

The exact two movies I was gonna mention. I slept with the lights on after Blair Witch.

I'd add The Ring - scariest movie I've ever seen.

And Truly, Madly, Deeply - bittersweet and heartbreaking.
