You need a domain name. SomethingProfound.net/.com - and you obtain/rent/purchase those from a domain name provider like NetworkSolutions.com, GoDaddy or DomainContender.com (google domain providers) and shop around.

One of the more important issues when purchasing a domain is whether to purchase domain privacy or not.
It's usually an extra $3.00 to $10.00 a year. When you create/register and purchase your new domain name,
you either don't mind having your real name plastered out for everyone and their brother to take note of, all
around the internet. Or you don't especially like that idea, so you purchase the privacy option and your real
name, contact phone number and registered address is not shown to anyone else, except you and your
Domain Registration company (and anyone you might hire to create your website).

You'll need a web hosting provider. You can google that term too, and shop around to determine what you are
paying for is what you really need. Anymore, you can purchase a basic starter size website of 5 gigabytes,
which is a ton of space for stories and poetry to be displayed on - in text format. The more glitzy bling you want
to add, the more space you will pay for. You might find a simple website would cost you around $7 a month (or less).

Then you'll need to put some elbow work into the site creation and publication & maintaining it. You can do this
yourself anymore, fairly easily. This does not mean that you'll be like Gav and working a lot on it, fixing, tweaking, etc...
There are companies (some of the web hosting outfits provide this capability) who specialize in providing this
service. They are very reasonable too. For $5-9.00 a month, you can have a small 'personal' website complete
with basic website creation software (included!)

There are 2 options.

1: You own your own domain name:

Recommended webhost: www.hostgator.com - $3.96 per month, to host an UNLIMITED number of domains.

That means, if an author here signs up, they could host everyone else who wants a website here, free.

I use godaddy.com to register domains, $12 pa.

So, the total cost to have your own website is $60 pa.

Hostgator comes complete with a program called fantastico, which makes setting up a basic site incredibly easy. You can install wordpress to your site in a few clicks of a mouse.

Some web hosting companies offer a free domain name as a bonus. It is highly advised that you register your name with another company. This way, if the web hosting company goes bust - you will not lose your domain name. *if you were like me a month ago and didn't know what domain means, it means your www.name.com address. Without a domain name, you won't have a site. For example if nic forgot to renew her domain name, I could easily purchase the lushstories domain name for myself. So my best advice is set your domain name for automatic renewal so you will never have to worry about it.

When buying a private domain, make sure that the privacy is included in all fields. I recently purchased one that covers my name, address, phone and email. When searching around prior to purchasing, I noticed that not all privacy fields were included and could display some of your personal information. Please do your homework thoroughly.

If you are totally clueless about setting up a website, consider purchasing a package that includes pre-built templates. I use website tonight and even though I heard some bad things about it, it made creating a site as easy as cutting holes in a bag. For as low as $5.60 a month, you can have a ten page website with your own forum and chat room - not like lush of course, as there is nothing like lush.

I really don't think I need to say anything about backup's.

I think what the OP is suggesting is when you publish here you also publish on your own personal website, with your own domain, that way you can claim copyright to your person.

However Under the US copyright act, anything that is published under a nom de plume is still copy-written as long as you have the original, or at least can prove it was your own work. I have 3 nom de plumes that I use.

So if you are really really paranoid. you can just go print off your works and get it notarized.

In addition if you have multiple works printed and published, and you have self published it, it is copy-written.

The old trick was to print your own documents off, and them mail it to yourself registered, and never open it, until you legally had reason too. The reason behind this one was it is a fraud to open mail addressed to someone else.. in addition if you used double registered you would have to sign for your own envelope, showing ID...

Unless lush were to be a corporation for self publishing, then the copyright would be guaranteed, but then lush would have to go after violators..
