You don't need a Kindle. Project Gutenberg (www.gutenberg.org/) has thousands of e-book versions of free classics.

Great site, I have already downloaded fifteen books from them.
It is true you do not need a kindle but I like to read in a comfortable armchair not from a laptop or desk top. I also enjoy Librivox for audio books some of the readers are really professional in their delivery. I aways send a thank you note for they have given time and made such effort. The only snag with audio is the time taken for download especially as I have an old slow machine and live out in the sticks.

I'm in reading and researching heaven. I still have a shed load of ooks to read from watching Ann Robinson, My Life In Books; so many books, I have ordered from the library. I'm reading a bit from each every other night, it is great!
I'm still reading Kafia on the Shore because of you Nic. Every time I get a train and a train tickt book mark, I always read a bit more! I love saving train ticket book marks, because it reminds me when I last read the book ha ha I will finish reading it some day maybe on some train station LOL
Check your local library for ebooks and audiobooks. The Albuquerque, NM (USA) library offers Overdrive.com. All you need is a library card and you can download from a selection of thousands of current and classic books. I drive a lot and listen to MP3 books on my Ipod. But they also have ebooks in several formats.

How does that work out for you? I don't think I could concentrate driving around in rush hour, and keeping up with a storyline. Have you had many crashes?!!

It works great for me. I have been listening to audio books while I drive since the late 80's. They were books on tape back then and you had a big case with up to 10 cassettes. I had to go to the city commissioners to get the library's policy changed. They only loaned the books on tape to the blind. I protested that I was a tax-paying citizen and had the right to use all the services of the library (government). It took some doing but I succeeded. BTW, they had a large selection and only a few blind patrons so I did not preclude disabled people from having access.

I don't feel that listening to an audio book is any different than listening to a talk-show or sports game on the radio. I am very careful to only listen while in open country, light traffic and good weather. Sometimes I have to go back in the story because I missed something while dealing with traffic issues.

And NO! I have not had any crashes, whether caused by a distraction or anything else. I have almost 2 million miles (3.2 million KM) of commercial truck driving without an accident in my driving career. For me, boredom while driving is much more dangerous. Without something to hold my attention, especially late at night, I will get drowsy and possibly fall asleep. Also, I do not use headphones. My Ipod connects through the speakers in the truck cab.

Additionally, I regularily download the audio stories here on Lush and listen to those on the road. But driving with an erection is somewhat uncomfortable at times.
